Owlboy is a perfectly serviceable metroidvania. It's certainly not bad, but ultimately, I stopped playing it before I finished it. It felt like a chore to keep coming back. I think this would be a good fit if you prefer to have a metroidvania really hold your hand a lot. There is an open world, but it mostly exists to connect specific areas you're pointed at. As such, most of the upgrades didn't feel like they were opening things up, just general progression on a rail.
