Never more…. – said Caleb after visiting his own grave. This game was released a bit too late – 1998. The PC market was already expecting a new generation full 3D FPP shooters like Quake . In the same year Half-Life made its first steps on the stage, and immediately became the blockbuster. So why was that old school Blood so successful? It’s all about the mood of this game. In my opinion Blood is the last FPP shooter that squeezed the 2,5D engines dry. That old engine was compensated by a large dose of humor and atmosphere which made the game incredibly playable. It was a compilation of the best elements created so far in games like Doom, Duke Nukem and alikes. Caleb with his black humor sayings, tons of comic references to old fashioned horror movies and sit coms, gloomy music theme and interesting level and character design. All these and more made the game so much unique it was a able to compete with a new wave of full 3D shooters. This game is a pure FPP fun full of comic blood and an outstanding climax. It’s also the prove that a good game doesn’t need to be packed with brand new technical achievements. It’s the convincing and seducing atmosphere which make the game great. Ta, da, da, da that’s all folks!
Another World is not only a world-wide masterpiece of computer entertainment industry. It’s not only a milestone in the world of computer games. For many of us it’s also a lot of great memories! I remember myself sitting in the dark room with my friend back then in 1990ties in front of his brand new Amiga computer on a hot summer day. When we were watching that awesome intro when Lester was running the experiment our jaws were slowly dropping down and at the end we were just staring at the screen in silent contemplation. What can I say more that this! And it was just a beginning of many, many hours of fantastic gaming. Bow before Eric Chahi’s lifetime achievement. He was and is a progenitor of all home grown indie developers. With this game he engraved his name on the hall of fame of the best games ever created. For many years I’ve been waiting for any possible sequel… and yet the 15th anniversary is giving to us a refreshed original. Better graphics and improved music by JF Freitas. Now we have a chance to go back to our memories. On Gog.com you also get more than a game itself. I highly recommend to download A Making of video. A must to have for every old school game player!
I’ve seen and played that game for the first time back in the 90ties on Amiga computer. It was still the time when Amiga was better than PC as far as the sound system was concerned. The main theme of Cannon Fodder was absolutely unique. The game itself too. Is it an anti-war game, as some people use to say? Not really. It’s all about killing and destroying! But hey! What the game on war should be about?! Getting back to main subject: Cannon Fodder is one of my favorite games ever. Its music theme is one of the best in the top-down view games. Its overall playability is magnificent. Its maps are very well designed with steadily increasing difficulty. And although this game’s about war, it takes it with a grain of salt. That’s why war has never been so much fun! I love those little soldiers each heaving their own respective names. Losing them was always making me sad. So be careful and don’t let them die! Great game!
