Planescape: Torment

Far more than "just a game."

Planescape: Torment is my absolute favorite game of all time. I am someone who well appreciates a deep and meaningful storyline, and on that front, boy does Planescape deliver. The writing is absolutely superb, better than a lot of novels out there. In addition it has a perfect mix of some of the most interesting companion characters I have ever known. It's hard not to love every one of them for one reason of another. It's not just great serious writing, but it also has a great sense of humor as well. This game has made me sit back and contemplate what I had just read as much as it has made me stop to laugh. It is not often that you come across a video game where combat is virtually optional. You spend the majority of your time doing non-violent, but rewarding and interesting quests, exploring, and reading a lot of dialogue. You gain far more experience by simply talking and listening and investigating than you do by any combat in the game. And I'll tell you, it's quite a refreshing change. For newer age gamers, this would be quite a big change of pace. To most the controls would feel clunky, and the gameplay slow-going with little help or aid in telling you where to go and what to do next. It is certainly a far cry from any modern games out there. Being a "modern" gamer myself I would have probably had trouble if I hadn't already gotten used to old style pc controls through playing the old Fallout games, and hadn't been extremely intrigued by the world and story to the point where investigating anything in it felt like it was worth my while, and because I cared about the Nameless One so much I would do anything to have him reach the end of his story. So I urge you, if you do end up giving Planescape a try, and are finding it difficult, please keep trying. It is WELL worth it, you will not regret the time you spent trying to figure things out, and in fact it is probably far more rewarding when you finally do finish it after all the trouble than it is being babied to the end like newer games. I am pretty sure they make it almost impossible for anyone to not finish a game these days. I also would advise you to refrain as much as possible from looking at guides, as it could spoil something. Only turn to them when you have tried everything you could possibly think of more than once. At least for the first play through, that's my advice. I love this game more than any other, and I hope I have done it justice in this review. To anyone who is considering it, it is worth far more than the $10 price tag, and is far more substantial, and far longer, than any $60 games out there today. It's a great deal, so do take GOG up on it! You will thank them later.
