Well where to start? I'm sure you've heard of Deus Ex but if you haven't played it, you owe it to yourself to buy this immediately. This game is so good, I've attempted to get my father to play it and my father is not a man who plays video games. Now to the details. Deus Ex is an amazing game. I don't care if you call it an RPG, a FPS, a stealth-action game or whatever, it doesn't matter. The fact is, DE transcends traditional genre archetypes and is quite simply, one of the best games ever made. You play as JC Denton, an all-business super human agent thrust into the middle of a world in conflict. You are highly trained and told from the get-go that you can handle problems your way. Even on your very first objective, you can choose to run n' gun, sneak around and avoid enemy troops, show mercy by using a stun-gun or stab everything in sight. Better yet, the characters in the world will react differently depending on which approach to take. Perhaps not so amazing now, but where do you think games like Mass Effect got the idea from? The story in this game is a deftly woven conspiracy that should offer some true surprises to a first-time player. Dialogue is often forgettable, but is hilarious and or excellent on enough occasions to stand out. The gameplay is perfect. It's not necessarily ground-breaking, but it's exactly what you need to get you through the amazing story. Shooter fans will be comfortable here, and RPG fans will appreciate that skill upgrades and augmentations will have a noticeable effect on your gameplay. Perhaps the only misstep is the fact that lock-picking and use multi-tools is automatic and involves no mini-game. But, when you consider that most of the time the mini-games controlling hacking/lockpicking suck (hi Alpha Protocol) it's much more forgivable. Then, once you consider that you can probably beat Deus Ex in pretty much its entirety without using a lockpick or a multi-tool it becomes irrelevant and also highlights just how amazing this game is. There is always a way. Go buy this game.
Baldur's Gate. Chances are, if you're on this site you know all about it. Baldur's Gate was one of the first truly awe-inspiring experiences I ever had on a PC. I remember watching the intro movie and just being completely engaged. As soon as I heard that I grew up "under the tutelage of the sage Gorion" I wanted to find out what this story was all about. I was most certainly not disappointed, and the story in Baldur's Gate still resonates with me more than 10 years after I first played it. As far as gameplay goes, in my opinion it equally matches the excellent story. Combat is defaulted as real-time, but you can pause the combat to assign commands to your party members, which is a huge asset later on. Trying to effectively play 6 characters in the heat of real-time combat can be tough, and it's a good idea to go in with a strategy. The combat system is fairly intuitive, especially back in 1999 and overall tons of fun. This game has an incredible atmosphere and you'll get to come across a wide range of characters, many of whom you may be familiar with. It's very easy to get lost in parts of the game and want to explore, which will inevitably provide you with hours worth of interesting side-quests and dialogue. No review will do this game justice. It's freakin' awesome and definitely one of my favourite games of all-time. If you're at all interested, don't hesitate to experience a true gaming milestone.
One of my favourite games of all-time. Just a beautiful video game, complete with a great story, excellent visuals and amazing game play. When I first played POP: SOT the combat system blew me away, and this game will always have a special place in my heart. If you've never played it, you OWE it to yourself to buy it and experience it.
This one I have my disc still :). I've played through multiple times and I never get sick of it. Each time I have a unique experience and this is a top notch sequel to a top notch game. If you're buying Fallout you owe it to yourself to buy Fallout 2 as well (and vice versa).
Having lost my copy years ago I can finally play through again. This is an outstanding game with one of the coolest settings/story lines ever. From the opening movie this game delivers top notch play and replayablity, you won't regret trying it out
