Freespace 2 is, in my opinion, one of the defining games of the whole space combat genre. You play as a pilot in a little spaceship, and get thrown into large battles, which get very intense very quickly, and induce some real "oh craaaaap" moments when capital ships enter the fray. The single player campaign is long and varied, and an editor is included for making your own scenarios. In addition, online multiplayer is also available, for when you want challaneging battles with humans. The modding scene is active, with many campaigns and total conversions released, and the FreeSpace Open Source Project improves the game with better graphics and mod support. In short: Buy it.
