Compared to the previous entry, this feels like more of the same with the addition of Mythic Paths - your character having a separate progression on top of levels, becoming closer to a powerful mythical creature. (Angel, Demon, Devil, etc) There are a LOT of options in character building, tons of classes on top of these paths which you can combine as you wish, all with a staggering amount of choices in spells, feats, features, companions, etc. Sadly, a lot of these options are bugged and don't work properly... similarly, some quests can become stuck due to bugs. The writing is a bit wonky, torn between competent-but-generic fantasy and fresh off from a tumblr blog, but that's often the case with modern RPGs! The game could be really good, but give them a month or two to eliminate most of the bugs, they're making decent progress at it.
This game feels like a cookie clicker with a very thin slice of a good plaforming and 2D combat game stapled on top. It even has a fully fledged cookie clicker minigame inside. The premise is that you have a town, and can adventure to gather resources to improve your town to improve your character to help you venture farther. Repeat ad nauseam. The combat is actually fairly decent, if shallow. You have 4 trees (quick attack, power attack, shield, throwing) that can affect the way you fight. For example, blocking lets some melee damage through, but you can unlock a passive that slows your movement speed while blocking but stops 100% melee damage, a passive to make the enemies you block stunned longer, and pick up another passive from another tree to have 4X damage against stunned enemies. You can therefore vary your character through each play-through, and there's even a stealth option, though poorly implemented. There are two main issues with it: the enemy variety is not very high, (about 10 basic enemies, and a few more "bounty targets" and bosses), and the combat is very, very unbalanced. Early on everything murders you, you do no damage, and your shield breaks instantly, then as soon as you have enough gold you can hire a mage that can carry you through 90% of the game. Then you can hire some more, and build a few town upgrades to quadruple their damage and triple their firing speed. You can also reposition them at will to your position. Alternatively, you can upgrade your blacksmith, allowing you to craft gear that makes you into an invincible unstoppable god. The worst part being, if you don't cheese the game, it will shit on you. Some of the late game fights are absolute clusterfucks no amount of skill will get you through. The main story is also very bland and uninspired. The lore pages you can pick up are interesting, but none of that shows in-game, and it feels the plot stops at 10% of the story, leaving you unsatisfied.
