Overall a great experience, nice quests, nice battles and characters. The battles depend too much on backstab and critical damage. If the game was harder and you make single-digit damage too often (like my champion or Driina), you are in trouble. Also, the crafting system is not very good, even in the ending I only had recipes for the minor potions. And I did not like the Cuthullu-inspired theme, especially at the endgame, where I don't know what happend. Difficulty is (very detailled) adjustable, and the default is rather easy. At the ending, I still had tons of food and potions, many arrows and I did not have to spam-use some feats and spells. But that's a good thing, as there are already too many hard CRPG out there. I am no casual or novice CRPG gamer, but I play for fun and relaxation, not to be stressed. And I encountered no bugs (I could not load a savegame while in the final battle, but that might have been deliberate, although before it was possible).
For the most part of the first ones, it is mostly clicking on dialogues, going to another place and again clicking on dialogues. But the first parts are not very long and it gets better, the later parts include more real puzzles and good ones too. I also liked that the locations focus on few interactive points so you don't have to click on tons of stuff with boring text. Also the dialogues don't get too much, mostly. For all parts I can say I liked the voice cast and the writing was also good (although not without some quirks).
I never played those games when they were new, so I catched up on them this year. And what can I say, the classics status is well deserved. Sure, it is a pity that the graphics don't show more, sometimes it is rather linear, the stories are often confusing und "Dark Queen of Krynn" annoyed me with some design choices. But then there are battles, magic and equipment. Even when I realized the above-mentioned flaws, the battles were always interesting, very tactical with many options. Also, I found the interface good to handle.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Great voice acting, the puzzles are rather easy most of the time and before it gets annoying, it is over. Although I clicked through the dialoges fast to get on with the game. Nothing against dialoges, but here I guess they were written not very good. And there is so much stuff that you don't need, I wondered whether this is supposed to be just a ton of red herrings or did they finish the game prematurely.
Nice one, with a good interface and interesting puzzles. Also, they are logical and not very difficult, so casual adventure gamers might solve this without a walkthrough. I did not like that when leaving and entering a szene, you have to wait for an animation, but it is not too long, so it is okay. And the story gets kind of confusing and there are some loose ends and open questions, but also here not too bad.
An adventure with classic point-and-click mechanics and much comfort - a quick start, autosave and automatic reset when dying. No dead ends and no pixel hunting. Just one downside: for the inventory you have go to one bottom corner instead of anywhere at the bottom which would be easier. The graphics are very nice and the voice acting is great. The characters are likeable and interesting. And the puzzles are interesting too, mostly logical, and not too hard, although sometimes you do something because it is possible, not knowing why you do it because you meet the puzzle elements before the connecting actions or dialogues that give meaning. Why just three stars nevertheless? Technobabble: the games throws around with this really a lot. It makes the story hard to follow and the conversations tiresome, and it makes some puzzles confusing: I got the dialog, but I did not know what it meant for the puzzle, what to do practically, or for what end. I figured it out and overall it never gets over the top so I would have stuck, but it spoiled much of the fun. Conversations: they might be written not badly, but I found them mostly boring. The characters also repeat some topics just in other words. So I clicked through, because you have to for a) following the story, b) getting hints for puzzles and c) in some cases the story to go on. Also, I think the story is basically great but a bit overloaded, I followed but I did not get either the details or a clear general view because there was so much and so many characters and factions.
The game gives a hard start, talking about characters that are not properly introduced so you don't know what everything is about. And my copy crashed three times. But it gets better, you get to know the characters and it becomes stable. Unfortunately, for me it was just an OK game. The main characters are not that sympatgetic. He can be kind of a jerk and she - I often did not even know what she was talking about (and one of her sisters talked even more annoying). Speaking about talking, for me the conversations were just boring, I clicked them through just to end them. Why did I finish the game all the same? Well, graphics and voice acting are nice, furthermore the interface is good and easy to use. And the puzzles are decent - although some are not very logical and you have to try-and-error your inventory with hotspots, many of them are fun. And solving them gives new motivation. It is hard to find an adventure games without flaws and many even have major ones (pixel hunting, dead ends, endless walks, unlogic puzzles), so this one is really worth considering. MINOR SPOILERS I had just two puzzles that I had to look up, the hieroglyph one because the answer is meta. Who would think of this - it would have been more fun to figure out a real in-game pattern. The other was the tango puzzle as I was forewarned and it really is not easy but it is a very nice one too.
Much is said about the style and humor, which I also think are great (beside some distasteful jokes, but they are not enough for spoiling it). Funny, witty and many popcultural references. For a text adventure it is also easy to play. You can see a verb list and the objects at all times, so there is good overview of possibilites. The pictures, may they not be very good, also play their part in remembering the scene and thinking about options. I also did not encounter dead ends. The time limit for each day ist also nothing annoying as it is okay for exploring and even if you fail it: when you save your game once in a while (beginning of each day) and you know what to do, it is just a matter of some commands to get to a desired point in the game.
Very nice graphics, great voices and protagonist. Also some nice puzzles and humor. But also very much walking and some illogical puzzles, and what takes the cake is the annoying one directly before the ending. Fortunately, GOG privides the clue book where it is explained in full detail. Did not play 1 and 3, but as far as I read this one is the best of the series, so you might start with this.
