Dead Cells

The best metroidvania I ever played

Dead Cells is an amazing metroidvania that is fast paced and skill based. There are tons of unlockable gears and a good variety of levels to keep things fresh even after dozens of hours. I love it when games give players the option to customize various aspects of the game and Dead Cells is one of those few games that let you do just that. While the normal game is very difficult at higher difficulties, most average gamers should be able to beat the hardest difficulty and unlock all gears thanks to all the ways to customize the game. My only gripe is that due to a bug, I am unable to obtain 3 blueprints that require doing daily challenges. This is an issue that many players are experiencing (it's not limited to linux). I had the game for over a month and I still have not been able to start a single daily challenge. At this point, I'm not sure the devs will address this issue.

Desperados III

Great successor to Shadow Tactics

Desperados 3 is the next tactical stealth game from the Shadow Tactics developer Mimimi Games. While D3 is still a great game with many improvements from ST, overall, I find ST more enjoyable. Pros - The stealth gameplay is like solving puzzles and you need to be clever and creative in order to get through the game. - D3 has some QoL upgrades that make the game more convenient to play than ST. Characters will now automatically climb (ladders, vines, etc.) to reach destinations. Fast forward is also a nice feature. - There are more levels and more ways to play than ST. Being able to play all characters in all maps is a very nice addition. - Isabelle's abilities are unique and magical in nature. She can do some interesting things very different from what was possible in ST. Cons - The wild west setting isn't as immersive for a stealth game as ST's ninja setting. - D3 characters are not as enjoyable as ST characters. Aside from Isabelle, all other characters are just weaker imitations from ST. Guns have bigger detection radius than shooting range, which limit their use. AOE options are limited and all require ammo (no more melee AOE takedowns like ST's Mugen). Kate (D3's version of Aiko) does not have melee kills. - Starting with chapter 2, almost all enemies have multiple other enemies that are looking at them, and it takes time to come up with a solution. This can drag things down and make the game a bit repetitive. It would have been better if the game had a good mix of simple enemy placements and complicated enemy placements throughout the level. - While graphically superior to ST, levels aren't appealing since majority of textures are just variations of ugly brown.

Horizon Zero Dawn™ Complete Edition

Excellent game dragged down by issues

HZD is a tactical open world 3rd person shooter with some basic stealth elements. Rather than just rushing in with guns blazing, the player must choose proper tactics (stealth, hack machines to fight each other, etc.), weapons, and ammo to overcome encounters against powerful machines. The open world is huge, beautiful, and has a lot of fun side activities to do. The game is very fun. Unfortunately, there are some incredibly aggravating issues that constantly drag the game down and make it difficult to just enjoy the game. - Severely limited inventory forces the player to manage inventory on a regular basis. Every 2~3 quests, I have to visit a merchant and fiddle with inventory. It gets incredibly aggravating and really kills the flow of the game. - No AOE or auto loot. Looting a dozen things one at a time gets old. - Poor visibility can make for another aggravating experience. In dark areas, it can be impossible to see the terrain and ledges to jump to. Landing headshots on human enemies can be difficult since you can't see them. It can also be hard to see the direction human enemies are facing, making stealth kills difficult. Not only that, when it's bright, it's hard to see focus highlights. - Clunky weapon/ammo/potion switching. Quick changing mid combat often leads to player rushing and accidentally selecting the wrong weapon/ammo since the game doesn't pause. Switching between potions is even worse as the game doesn't even slow down, nor can the player move while switching potions. - While crafting ammo, the player has to be mindful and stop the game from wasting resources to craft 1 ammo. - Aiming and dodging don't work together well. With the camera zoomed in while aiming, you will not know if you'll fall off a cliff or walk into a wall and not have room to dodge. There's also no way to know of attacks coming from the sides. - Dialogue, story, and characters (including Aloy) are boring and uninteresting.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

Beautiful and amazing game

Ori and the Blind Forest is a Metroidvania style game where the focus is on precise platforming gameplay, with light combat mechanics. Despite not being my type of game, I really enjoyed this game. Pros: - Beautiful atmosphere with amazing graphics and music. - Clever level design makes it a blast to play and explore the world. - Ability to create custom checkpoints just about any where is convenient and especially helpful for players new to platformers. Cons: - Floaty and inaccurate controls can result in deaths. - It can be difficult to make out enemy attacks and harmful environment traps due to visual clutter. - Too much trial and error gameplay where the only way to prevent death is to know about the upcoming danger in advance. - Some sections are frustratingly difficult for players not familiar with precise platformers. - Game is too short.

Batman™: Arkham Knight

One of my favorite games.

The last game in the Arkham trilogy. This game is (along with Arkham City) one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know how many times I replayed this series, across multiple platforms. Pros - You really feel like you're Batman in the game. RS did an amazing job. - An enhanced version of Arkham City in almost every way with better graphics, bigger world, and more upgrades. - Grapple boosting through the city is so much fun. It's one of the most fun ways to travel in any game. Sometimes, I'll just boost around the city just for fun. - Simple, but fun combat with lots of different moves and gadgets. - Very fun stealth sections. The stealth challenges, in particular, are so fun. - The Batmobile is a nice addition that adds more to the game and the Batman fantasy. - Excellent open world with a lot to do. - Awesome challenge missions with lots of playable characters add a lot to the game. - Great story. - Perfect atmosphere. - Excellent voice acting. - Graphics are amazing. Cons - The Batmobile is overused and gets repetitive. The Batmobile battles, in particular, replace all major fights, but they're too simple and shallow to be used so much. - Batmobile controls terribly and skids all over the place. This makes the race challenges and a couple of boss encounters very annoying. - No option to turn on counter icons in NG+. - Environment takedown and vehicle takedown cameras are very disruptive. - With so many different enemy types crammed together, it can be a bit annoying trying to use a specific move on a specific enemy. This can be a bit annoying for combat challenges. - Inaccurate controls and medals sometimes not registering can make for frustrating experiences during hard predator challenges. - Some of the predator challenge objectives are extremely frustrating. - Poor optimization. - A little buggy. - Issues recognizing DS4 controller.

Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year Edition

One of my favorite games of all time

The second game in the Arkham trilogy. They took everything I didn't like about the original and enhanced it in every way. This is one of my favorite games of all time and I replayed this so many times, on multiple platforms. 9/10 Pros - You really feel like you're Batman in the game. RS did an amazing job. - Grapple boosting through the city is so much fun. It's one of the most fun ways to travel in any game. Sometimes, I'll just boost around the city just for fun. - Simple, but fun combat. Combat in the first game was a bit too simple. RS enhanced the combat with even more moves and better flow. - Very fun stealth sections, with even more ways to take enemies down. The stealth challenges, in particular, are so fun. - Excellent open world with a lot to do. - Awesome challenge missions with lots of playable characters add a lot to the game. - Good story. - Perfect atmosphere. - Excellent voice acting. - Graphics are good and hold up well. Cons - With so many different enemy types crammed together, it can be a bit annoying trying to use a specific move on a specific enemy. This can be a bit annoying for combat challenges. - Inaccurate controls and medals sometimes not registering can make for frustrating experiences during hard predator challenges.

Grim Dawn

Couldn't get into the game

I couldn't get into multiplayer, but I was willing to overlook it since I mostly play single player. Unfortunately, I encountered too many annoying issues to be able to enjoy the game and just asked for a refund within hours of purchase. 1) Various controller issues. No DS4 support. Sometimes, controller won't be recognized. Sometimes, I had issues with controller input lag. At times, only some buttons worked. Some menus don't work with the controller at all. When I didn't have technical issues with a controller, I just couldn't get comfortable with their function in menus. When using a controller, this game could use a completely reworked menu that's meant for a controller, instead of simply mimicking a KBM. 2) No quest tracking. Even if I was willing to overlook controller issues and play with a KBM, the lack of quest tracking kills the game for me. I don't like reading through a wall of text to get a mild hint of where I need to go, then spend a lot of time lost not even knowing if I'm even anywhere near the quest location. 3) Very boring beginning. For the first 8 levels or so, all I was doing was holding down a button and watching my character auto attack, one target at a time, against a dozen enemies. I have no idea if skills were available for purchase since the game isn't very good with tutorials. It was mind-numbingly boring.
