Bottom line, if you're a fan of science-fiction RPGs, and can live with first-person POV and real-time combat, you owe it to yourself to play this one. It's got its own take on the cyberpunk genre, so don't count on playing a hero or saving the world; it's a dystopia after all. There are some annoyances but they don't outweigh the enjoyment you'll get from the game. More details here: https://themichlinguide.wordpress.com/2024/07/03/review-cyberpunk-2077-a-video-game/
In summary, if you're interesteed in W40K and you like top-down squad turn-based RPGS, you should play this. On the down side, I found the last chapter underwhelming, the ending disappointing, and the rules unnecessarily Byzantine. In spite of its rough debut, and in spite of some issues I have playing the current version, the game's environment and story are intense. There are plenty of options for how to play, and several different endings. I wrote up a very detailed review https://themichlinguide.wordpress.com/2024/07/03/review-cyberpunk-2077-a-video-game/ but suffice it to say that if this game sounds at all interesting to you, you should take the plunge and experience it for yourself.
Nice alternative historical piece. The visuals are evocative. The costumes are fun. I got 69 hours and 40 minutes of play, doing almost all the sidequests I found and finishing the game. Quite a bargain. I played on Easy mode because I'm a thinking man rather than a twitch-reflex gamer. I appreciated the Pause button for the same reason. The stories were interesting, and I grew to care about the characters and the world. Downsides? There are usually some. Mechanically there were a few inconveniences, but nothing to cause a rage-quit. I think I died less than a dozen times, and there were no consequences to tick me off. There were a couple of combats that I thought were just too difficult, even on Easy level. Choices seemed to make some difference, but you didn't always have enough freedom of choice. And finally, the developers had their own philosophy to the story and you can't get around it. Again, not enough to prevent me finishing and having an overall enjoyable time. Oh, one last thing. The native accent was almost too bizarre to take...
I bought this when it was knew, had the mouse pad for years. Tried playing the game then but I just got stumped and went on to play other things instead. Picked this up on GOG a while back thinking I'd give it another chance, especially since I liked Disco Elysium so much. But I just don't like this. Yeah, it's old but so am I. OTOH, as was endemic in this gaming genre I just can't figure out what I'm supposed to do half of the time. Minor spoiler, the player is told that the first protagonist's goal is to kill himself. About five minutes into it I figured that out. Boom, that guy's adventure was over. Five minutes. But looking online, there were tons of other things written for him to do. Non-intuitive things. Especially when I replayed it and killed myself again a different way. Still way easy, and checking online I see I missed a ton of other stuff for him to do. Tried the second protagonist. I needed the walkthrough periodically, but played that storyline out. Remarkably unsatisfying. Third protagonist. Tried without looking anything up. Got stuck, found out that by doing something completely intuitive and in-characfer I had committed an error and couldn't complete his story. I give up.
I enjoyed the game and the options. Wish there were more games like this one. Only problem is that I had to have a walkthru handy. I got stuck about five times in the course of a fifteen-hour playthru. I don't think the solutions to proceed weren't at all intuitive in those cases. Spoiler-free tho'. Anyway, I'll keep my eyes open for more.
Old fan of Fallout 1 & 2 and that ilk, played RPGs since they came out. I wanted to like this but all the issues mentioned by other reviewers. After something like fifteen hours, I'm done. Can't figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, everything is so convoluted and non-intuitive, and now the timer ran out for the first of my characters due to "acute infection." And I'm still not at all clear on how I could've accomplished more any faster. I'm supposed to be having some relaxing fun. Instead I'm just pissed off. Uninstall button, here I come.
The concept and reviews looked good so I had great hopes. But although I explored everywhere I could, walked around VERY slowly using the big magnifiying glass, and talked to everyone they let me, I was astonished when the game stifled any further progress until I would make unfounded guesses as to questions that I didn't have answers to. Which then fouled my investigation, again and again (although I did manage to guess right twice). Also as another reviewer stated, my character was limited in his choices in a way I never, ever would have followed. Ever. And finally, with all the talk in gaming about "trigger cards" and such, I was very unpleasantly surprised at where the story went and would have much preferred to have known in advance about a particular plot device that I absolutely abhor. Fortunately the game is extremely short and the ending I got was just barely satisfactory. So live and learn, no need to play anything more by these folks.
