This OST is high quality, AAA level. It combines natural & electronic instruments. The natural instruments I listened more were the marimba and the oboe. I especially like the drums. They are uncommon, some sort of industrial drums. Not your regular drum kit. Also, each track is long & I love that. Other games have just 1 min. songs. The music is too emotional, It makes me remember how dark and sad Brok's world is, and the injustice between the Drums & the Slums. There is only one con I found: The OST is not looped. However, I understand that implementing that in a game is not easy, as I fooled with Game Maker and Unity (not anything serious). So, I looped the tracks I liked by myself, and converted them into OGG files with loop points, for playback in Winamp. I liked the addition of themes with variations (the interrogation themes). It's like Ace Attorney, but instead of 2 variations, BROK has 4. Tracks I didn't appreciate until I took the time to listen to them: - 26 (I didn't like it because It's only a piano, but now I think it's beautiful) - 65 (OMG! Brok sings! Although I didn't understard all the lyrics, as I'm not a native English speaker) - 13, 3 & 69 (These ones are epic a tense, such a shame they're only used in very small portions of the game). Favorite dark tracks that give me chills: #26, #5, #8, #10, #41. Favorite mystery tracks: #40 & #27. Favorite action tracks: #20, #51 & #50. Most iconic tracks that make Brok appear in my mind instantly: #19, #73, #7 & #8. #72 would have been perfect for the night setting in the game. Favorite track overall: #38 (In total, I listened to it for 20 hrs. or more). I listened to that too much, that now it's not the same, hehe. During a terrible weekend I had, I cried a lot, and I was listening to #26 & #5. I already feel nostalgic when I listen to this music, and I only finished the game a month ago! Despite the criticism in all my reviews, I became attached to Brok. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, his game & the OST!
I'll use this review to talk about the game's graphics. I assume you completed the game. If not, STOP READING THIS. Let's start with the cons: There was one thing that made me feel uncomfortable: The game over image you get when RJ defeats Brok. That's why: 1.- It's made in a totally different art style. Actually, that's the only image that doesn't fit the game's art style. 2.- Brok's lower body and RJ are OK. But I Brok's face... I don't feel he's Brok, I feel It's another alligator impersonating him. There are other details, that aren't serious, but still made me feel strange: 1.- Why is the generic rat wearing a t-shirt in his dialog portrait, but he doesn't in the overworld? 2.- Brok looked happy in his overworld sprite while he was being grabbed by the final boss. I believe It was because the sprite was small. 3.- There are things you can't see in-game because other things cover them. I explored the game files to be able to see them. I'm talking about "BACK_PC09B_RJ_FIX.png", "BACK_PC08C_BROKSHAY.png" and "BACK_PC20_HOSPITAL.png". I also feel sad because I saw things in the artbook that weren't implemented in the game: 1.- Cool and cute sprites of different characters. 2.- Tramp standing up (P. 34). 3.- The thing shown in P. 14. 4.- Alternative outfits (P. 26, 32, 44). I imagine how cool would be to play as Brok and Graff wearing boxer outfits. Now, let's go with the pros: I can describe the art style with these words: cute, charming, colorful and made with effort. I loved that Cowcat decided to make the characters and the world using detailed cartoon drawings. Other indie games just use "retro" or "8-bit" graphics and I believe that's just lazy. Cowcat took a risk and, even though there are details as the ones I mentioned before, the whole package was definitely worth it. I trust Cowcat will take the criticisms & use them to make a bigger and better sequel. Now, I'm going back to a dark corner to be sad because "Brok 2" hasn't been released yet. Bye.
I knew about this game some months before its release, when I was looking for "Upcoming Releases". The first time I saw Brok (the character) I loved it; so I said "I must buy this game". This is the 1st Point & Click I played, I'm not too smart & I wanted to use as less clues as possible. Because of all this, my first run (where I was the nicest I could) lasted more than 40 hrs. I spent a lot of time thinking, going around in circles and trying wrong solutions. But that's OK, because I wanted to have the merit of figuring the things out by myself. You can have your own playstyle and use clues. This is an indie game. There were some places I was expecting to know later in the game, but I couldn't. The animation could be more fluid. There could be more characters. Several actions are not shown, just a fade effect. I would like to have seen the characters talking in the overworld instead of in external dialog portraits. However, the game has full superb voice acting, lots of dialogue, likeable characters, beautiful music & the most important thing: It was made with love. I didn't like Graff too much, because I felt he takes the spotlight off Brok. But, I ended getting used to him. After I unlocked everything & I got almost all achievements (except "Main Endings"), I got the canonical ending. Oh boy! That ending left me a huge void, too much sadness. I was expecting that ending to be long; that I'd be able to get all the answers. But no, a lot of mysteries kept unresolved. It felt like the ending of "HL2 Episode 2". This is not a complaint. A good piece of art must make you feel emotions, & this game greatly managed that. Brok became one of my favorite characters of all media. He's perfect & his voice actor is a total 10/10. I need "Brok 2" as much as "Half Life 3". Cowcat, thank you very much! You made gold, please keep it up! I wish to be alive to play as Brok once again. And, If you are thinking if you should buy this game: Just do it! You won't regret it!
