Pool of Radiance

The Gem of the Gold Box Series

Poll of Radiance was the game that proved computers could recreate the tabletop RPG experience. It had mystery, intriguing characters, a tight plot, brilliant design -- and tons of old school dungeon charm, with wizards sending you on fetch quests, orgres playing catch, mysterious rope guilds, and so much more. This game is not for everyone (it took me five minutes to figure out how to get the damn menu system to work, since there's NO MOUSE SUPPORT -- maybe that should have been mentioned in the documentation somewhere), but if you can handle the creaky 80s-era computer interface, there's an astonishingly addictive game underneath it. The slums and dungeons of the city of Old Phlan are dangerous enough that you'll be grubbing for silver coins to buy that banded armor, and chasing every rumor of buried treasure. And there are lots of them. Enjoy!
