I liked the setting and theme of the game, not so much the actual experience. I liked the "inflict pain to the enemies" gameplay design, as well as the dark and gruesome environments. The music is really bad, with only a couple tracks being good. The sounds are mostly awful, with the exception of the voices from Caleb, the Zombies and the Cultists. The gameplay is fun when dealing with zombies and the properly placed cultists, but annoying when dealing with everyone else: rats, hands, spiders, gargoyles, fatguys, phantasms are just annoying.
If you want to play this game "terminator" style, think again. There's less ammo in this game than in a survival horror game like resident evil. The AI is also really dumb. Looting a room in this game requires an optional ability that goes on cooldown! You can see loot only for 6 seconds then you have to stand still and wait another 6 seconds to resume looting. So basically you can loot half the time and the other half you have to STAND STILL AND WAIT. That makes looting REALLY boring. And you can't even say that looting is optional, because money, health, energy, skill points, ammo, as well as side quest items are found only this way!
Gameplay: The gameplay is mostly fun for a fps game, although it's still sometimes cheap when it spawns enemies behind you or the instant reaction ranged zombie soldiers. I recommend playing this game. I found the 3 hour long Lost Mission Expansion to be more enjoyable than the original Resurrection of Evil expansion. BFG vs Original: As a person who liked the original Doom 3 I still would recommend playing the BFG edition because it is a better overall experience. I played the original Doom 3 many years ago and I liked it at the time. Now I've played the Resurrection of Evil expansion using the source port dhewm3. First problem: It takes time to set it all up. Furthermore I found the gameplay to be mediocre because of several factors like few ammo, no visibility, awful crosshair, unreliable shotgun. After playing the original I've played the Lost Mission expansion of the BFG Edition and I have to say that the developers addressed almost all the issue of the original game. The shotgun is still unreliable, but you have more ammo for the good weapons, you can activate the flashlight while holding a gun which helps with visibility. The graphics have also improved: you can set a bigger fov, you don't have to use a source port to play the game in widescreen resolution, the crosshair is more visible, the framerate can go beyond 60 fps.
