Warhammer: Chaosbane

Competent but not amazing Diablo clone.

This is a fun ARPG, with decent pacing and action, a passable story, but lacks any big spark that makes it really shine. The big draw is the Warhammer fantasy setting, and if you're a fan like me, that's enough. A bit iffy at full price, but on sale, my recommendation is unreserved.

Tesla vs Lovecraft

Fun and Frenetic

Not super deep but a fun, fast-paced game with a cool aesthetic and concept.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY Edition

A rough masterpiece

Morrowind is a game that shows it's age in its graphics, and some systems, but it is justly famous and one of the greatest games of all time, in spite of its flaws. I do not believe there is a game out there that better captures the feeling of being in a fantastical, alien world, and I doubt there ever will be. The heavily stat based, ttrpg style systems can throw people at first, but once you understand them, you can master, and if you desire break them in fun, creative ways. The lack of quest markers, requring you to read npc dialogue and quest instructions, takes some getting used to, but goes a long way to immersing you in the game. It's hard to get into at first, but I urge everyone to give this game genuine try.

Startopia

An Unsung Classic

Startopia is a delightful sci-fi management sim where you build and mantain a space station. Hardcore sim/management players will probably find the gameplay a little on the simple side, but it's perfectly servicable, and the big draw is the game's personality. It has a wonderfully Douglas Adams-esque sense of humor that makes the game fun and entertaining. I really feel like I can't overstate the wit and charm contained in this game. Would recommend anyone try it.

Heroes of Might and Magic® 3: Complete

To date, the best in series

This, along with Dungeon Keeper 2 and Nox, are the games I joined GOG for. It's a timeless classic. Though 2D, the beautifully drawn graphics with storybook-esque aesthetic have weathered the test of time beautifully. The strategic gameplay is sublime, particularly the hex grid tactical battles. It definitely invokes the one-more-turn syndrome. There is just nothing wrong with this game. I mean it, unless you expect it to be anything other than one of the best turn based strategies of all time, you will not be disappointed period. This is the cream of the crop.

Dungeon Keeper™ 2

A sublime management/strategy game.

This is one of the all time greats, a series that, due to the business end of things, died in its prime (CURSE YOU, EA!) Not your typical RTS, this game has a management aspect too, as you have no direct control over your creatures. If that sounds a little odd and off-putting to you, let me assure you, I felt the same way when I first picked up the game, but it works. The creatures are (with rare exceptions) smart enough that they don't need you to move them around like typical RTS soldiers. The indirect methods work, (dropping creatures into a fight, leading them by a possessed creature, etc.) for getting them to fight when & where you want them to, while they handle the day-to-day stuff of feeding, getting fed, and for those who are capable, doing other jobs like researching spells & manufacturing traps. Whilst I'm not normally the guy who cares that much about graphics, I will say that this game looks much cleaner than its predecessor, and it's much easier to tell what's going on. The graphics themselves are a little dated, with relatively simplistic models, but they have aged with grace. Of course, the greatest thing about this game is the atmosphere. In DK2, you're not just evil, you're positively gleeful about it. By this I mean that rather than being serious and overly grim, the game has a wonderful sense of humor about itself. Additionally, the music sets the mood well, and the 'Mentor' who informs you of everything from mission objectives to status updates like when your creatures' payday rolls around, is wonderfully voiced. Seriously I can't overstate how perfect he is in this role. In conclusion, if you at all enjoy fantasy, strategy, or the role reversal of playing an unrepentant villain, mastermind, scoundrel, ne'er-do-well, then BUY THIS GAME. You'll thank me later.
