The first half or so was fantastic, had me engaged with the story, weapons, skills, and exploration - in fact, I kept running around looking for more npcs to talk to because I didn't want to leave those areas...around midgame I noticed the content was slipping, quests were less interesting (same blahness of the typical fedex quests), and the story began to drag...and the last third is simply utter rushed garbage. It's very obvious that the devs (a) ran out of money, (b) chased a deadline, or (c) both. The first couple of worlds had lots to do, but the last few areas had almost nothing ... a complete letdown. I finished it, but it was over so abruptly that it brought to mind the last part of Rage (and if you played that game, you know exactly what you are in for here). Great potential ruined.
Played the original years ago, one of those games that I didn't want to see end. The combat was fantastic, from the skills to the actual mechanics of launching your attacks. The world was beautiful and big enough, with each area having a distinct feel/vibe to it. I even got into the lore of the game and found myself making decisions based on what I wanted for the world, not necessarily min/maxing my char. It felt like I was playing in an MMO world built just for me. Loved it. Unfortunately, this is a game that will always be judged by many for the "off the field issues" related to 38 Studios. And there's a lot that went wrong there, no doubt. But solely judging the game on its own merits, it's a fantastic experience well worth the time of any rpg fanatic.
Along with Mission Critical, here's a game that I've been dying to replay. Bought it back in the floppy days...hilarious superheroes and villains, the setting was also quite memorable. The superpowers and the combat kept me going as much as the city exploration and story did. I've always felt this one deserved a remake, but replaying this classic will have to do...thank you once again GOG!!
I played this when it first came out - just a completely immersive, mind-controlling game. A unique experience for it's time. Even now, just staring at the picture of the Ranger Center takes me back to a very special, warm place. I am buying it, but not sure if I can really ever go back to that place again. Yes, it has spawned the Fallout series, and I'm sure it has more than slightly inspired the Stalker, Metro 2033 series, and others....but methinks those games will make me keep Wasteland where it belongs - fixed in my mind as one of the greatest gaming experiences ever. I don't want to boot it up to realize that yes, the interface was/is beyond clunky, that the combat is flawed, that ...well, u get the idea. Hard to go back, almost impossible to convince new gamers to try something that looks like this. Their loss. I'll always know where this game took me, and I'm a much better gamer for the experience. In truth, there are certain titles that define 'classic' pc gaming. Along with the Ultimas, Wizardry, Starflights and M&Ms, GoG has now pretty much earned their name with the addition of this legendary title. Thank you for taking me back - again.
Taking me back GoG ! This one had it's moments, definitely cut from the M&M mold in terms of party and perspective, but though most of my memories are fuzzy on it....I do remember it amounted to a really, really long dungeon grind that lost it's fun factor about halfway through. It just wasn't gripping enough to carry me through. I always think of it along with Undermountain..underwhelming, but maybe worth a revisit for nostalgia.
I was just thinking of these titles this past weekend, wondering if they'd ever show up here. Bought, sight unseen (does that phrase even make sense?) This is why I have a GoG account. Moments like this. If you want a tough, hard-nosed, old-school experience, look no further. Back then, you had to roll entire parties, lots of choices, the fights were hard, the difference factions made for a great experience.....just buy it already. Hall of Fame games right here. Don't even wait for a sale.
