A New Beginning: Final Cut

Very good adventure with a mature Story.

Very good adventure with a mature and well written Story. I have played so many adventure games and I have to say that A New Beginning stands out for its mature and thrilling story. I really got to like the main characters which is rare. The dialogue was well written and witty. The story is not as simplistic as it might look like like in the beginning - no spoilers. Why not 5 stars? The Mac - version crashed sometimes (which was not so bad because once you figured out the puzzles it does not take a long time to catch up again - but saving regularly is advised). Also: The puzzles were mostly good, sometimes very clever. But I could have lived with less "use pipe on this" and "use knife to cut" - if you know what I mean. Difficulty was quite low (for me as a veteran) - but not too easy. some of the mechanical (and skippable) puzzles were quite tricky and fun. I had a great time and ANB is certainly one of the more memorable adventure games out there.

DOOM II

Good collection

I liked TNT: Evilution. Don't know why people seem to hate it. I DID hate Plutonia experiment though.

DOOM 3

Worst Doom Game

I like all Doom games, except for this one. I bought it to complete my selection and I wanted to finally play it. What can I say: There are much better sci-fi horror games out there (System Shock, Dead Space, Alien Isolation Soma). And there are also much better Shooters (too many to name). I played D3 for 6 hours and I was so bored. The combat is very clunky with reloading all the time, slow movement. I would not want to play this game without the flashlight. I mean yeah, nice light effects, but since when is shooting into darkness fun? Maybe I did not get it. The sound is horrendous. I did not even understand what the people were telling me through the radio. The never ending samey corridors were the final straw - I gave up. I never made it out of delta labs. - it's a pitty.

Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3

Pretty bad.

I love old games. I love Old School fixed angles survival horror games and I don't care for graphics that much. the reason I give this game only 2 stars is because it plays horribly. I would argue that it never was a good game to begin with. I am sure people struggled with the controls in 1992 as they are today. You see, certain games just work. Wing Commander, Resident Evil, Doom, System Shock, you name it. If it works, it works. AitD does not. I can't play this game. I tried, I really tried. Double click for running (does not work), so you are slow as a snail all of the time. And the worst, the worst, the combat. It feels like tossing a coin. You have to press fight in a certain moment or the enemy will hit you first and your hit-animation will take too long so you can't counter untill your are hit again. Then I find a Saber, I think okay, now the game is a bit better maybe - but nooooo. After 4 Hits the saber breaks and I get killed again. WHAAAAAT!? I love old games, I am not a spoiled person who can't get into the good old games anymore - the opposite is the case. I like polygons, pixels and challenges. AitD just sucks and is unplayable. Any good review is mostly nostalgia or maybe I just can't play this game unlike others, I dunno. Purchase only if you "collect" classics like myself. And finally: Yes, I see now how much Resident Evil ripped off AitD. How insincere of Capcom to deny that. So if you are curious too see the origin like myself: buy on sale. But don't expect a playable game.

Blade Runner

This game is not good

I love Blade Runner, Sci-Fi and Adventure Games. I dont know what is wrong with all the praise for this game. I think 90 % nostalgia bias is taking over the review scores. So let me make it clear to you: This game has no puzzles! The gameplay is this: You click from scene to scene and need to go back to a previous screen to progress the game. Which screen? that is the gameplay. Find the next relevant screen you have already been before to progress the game. Production values are amazing. But gameplay is a big let down. I am very, very disappointed in you internet, for hyping this game.

Toonstruck

Much more than just a gimmick.

People might think that this game is all about "Roger Rabbit" style humor and Christopher LLoyd. I played this game in the 90s and had fond memories of it. I just recently replayed it on SCUMMVM and while it might not be the masterpiece that some want to see in it, I still had a very good time with it. The game is not as funny as I remembered (I was young back then), but I chuckled here and there and the voice acting is still great. Story, art and music have immense production values. But most importantly, the game is a rock solid adventure game. The puzzles make sense (in the context of a cartoon world), without being too easy. Progression feels natural and well paced. There is a reason why the popularity of this game grew over the years. It might not be one of the greatest, but one of the most memorable ones. I got this game for free (Thanks GOG), but I would recommend the game for a price like 5$. 10$ seems a bit steep.

Star Trek™: 25th Anniversary

It is okay...

The reviews of ST25 here on GOG seem to be very inflated by nostalgia. I have never played this game before and I am not a Trekkie, but I do have my own nostalgia for old point&clicks and especially the old Wing Commanders (although I started with WC III back in the day). I really do enjoy Wing Commander 1, 2 and Privateer a lot. ST25 mixes these two genres, which is an interesting concept. Unfortunately ST25 isn't a very good P&C game and shooting star ships is more fun in Wing Commander. - The puzzles are not very clever. - Combining items is not obvious and kind of "hidden", so be aware that you CAN combine items. - The interface is very clunky. - Technobabble is not suitable for puzzles. - Space combat is okay, but you will struggle with the low resolution. And so on. HOWEVER: I can't deny that this game has a lot of charm. The episodic structure is reminiscent of the TV Show and the Stories do feel like Star Trek. The voice over adds to the atmosphere. Commanding your crew on the bridge (repairs, navigation, research, hailing etc.) is kind of fun. And I also like that you get a score for each mission (up to 100%), which is rewarding and gives you incentives to replay them and to find out, what you missed on your first try. I think you need to be in one of the nostalgia camps to appreciate this game, because there are many games that are better than ST25 and also much cheaper. I also think that 9.99 Dollars/Euros is WAY too much and almost a rip off. So if you are curious, please wait for a sale, like I did.
