This game defintiely has some flaws, especially the weird difficulty curve, and its share of bugs like things occasionally falling through terrain. However it's still really fun and the story is quite compelling. There's also a lot of world building that went into this and it shows. All in all I'd say it's about the same or a bit more fun than Witcher 3. About the DRM, I'm pretty sure I was able to opt out completely or agree only to some anonymous game-only stats so something seems to have changed since the other reviews were posted.
It's one of the best examples of a genre that used to be called "slasher" as opposed to a "shooter". Meaning, you run around and kill things by cutting them up instead of shooting holes in them. It was so good that nothing came close for a long while and the whole genre fell into obscurity until Darksiders picked it up again and then later Dark Souls expanded on the formula by merging it with Rouge-likes (something I will never forgive it). It's one of those games that sucks you in and is hard to put away, with a mix of amazingly fun gameplay and a decent story. To me it was one of the few I played to completion at the time because most games back then became progressively harder as you went on but they rarely offered anything in return for the increased effort, this game did. I fought the last boss more than once just for the fun of it. This relates to why I mentioned Dark Souls doing the genre dirty, it brought back that pointless difficulty purely because people mistake nostalgia for good game design. Anyway, if you've never played it and don't mind the aged graphics it's one of all-time classics that's definitely worth playing.
This is a classic and I don't think I need to describe it to anybody. In simple terms, it's the smoother, more action oriented and, frankly, easier, sibling to all them Baldur's Gates and Icewind Dales. Still plenty of story, great characters and fun dialogue to go around but you won't get as bogged down by the game wanting you to fail and start again. What you truly need to know about this edition is that it corrects most of the bugs and inconsistencies of the original release, which allowed me to finally finish the game (I stopped playing back then when I encountered a bug where I permanently lost control over one of the characters). A lot of things that simply didn't work back then now do. You also get to experience some things that weren't fully implemented in the original. That said, the wikis tracking all the loose ends from the original's code suggest that more could have been done. Overall a pretty sweet deal though. Oh, and you get all the expansions, though to me they feel tacked on, depsite the first one allowing you to use your caracter from the original campaign.
This game offered the kind of asymmetrical combat and strategic depth that many modern RTSs can only dream about. Forget about Age of Empires, this was the true original classic. The one and only problem with it was the same as all other strategic games of old, that the computer's AI shortcommings were balanced by it simply cheating :) Now that it's free there's no excuse for not playing it!
This is easily one of my top 5 favourite RTS games but if you've never heard of it there are 3 words you must hear: CONFIGURABLE GIANT ROBOTS. Let's face it, the game has an ok story, a nice atmosphere, good, varied by faction soundtrack but none of these are what gave it a small cult following. The real selling point is the fact that your main fighting force here are heroes piloting giant humanoid robots like in General Daimos, Voltron or some other mecha you know. What's more, these iron giants are constructed from parts which are manufactured separately and then assembled as you see fit. You want a dual-wielding swordsman? Sure! A shell-spitting gun battery? Why not! Or maybe a flying missile platform? Here you go! Even better, you can cut off limbs from enemy machines and equip them in the field! And it does matter because each faction has its own signature parts and there are also aliens here with some unique stuff. I have never had so much fun just building my army in any other game!
The game seems nice, as expected of Microids, story is interesting and puzzles while fairly easy are entertaining. However 9% into it I run into a game breaking bug where I couldn't click the item I needed to progress and since the game autosaves there was nothing I could do other than restart.
