A nice stealth and strategy game which privileges careful planing and micromanaging over blind bullcharges. The problem is that every mission looks like the previous one and mistakes in the earlier stages (e.g. killing too many "innocents") can make the game really hard in the end.
Darklands could be seen like the father of every party-based RPG: the player gets to lead four adventurers in search of glory and riches. What really stands out is the thorough research behind this game: it doesn't take place in some fantasy world but rather in medieval Germany (albeit with some "artistic license). Character creation, skills, equipment, missions and much more have an authentic flavor and the sandbox structure offers whole days of play. Take it, you could even learn something!
This wonderful RPG is not based on hacking your enemies to earn gold and XPs but rather on a very complex plot which requires attention. Every interaction has a meaning and the environment is by no means a generic fantasy land. Buy it if you are fed up with linear plots and level grinding.
This is the first HoM&M game that I played in the '90s (with a somewhat questionable italian translation). The serie went on and gave use quite a few good titles but this game is a good starting point as any. Just type 32167 and roast your enemies.
I remember playing this game back in the '90s on an old 486 with my friends... I bought it again just for nostalgia's sake but it's clearly outdate on every front: graphics, sounds, gameplay, extras... I only suggest you to buy if you miss your childhood (or if you direly need to shoot pixelated nazis).
Nowadays Lara Croft has attained the status of a pop icon but a quarter century ago she was just a bunch of polygon (with a pair of admittedly huge juggs) jumping around among grainy textures. There is little in the way of evolution between a title and the following one but these games are funny and provide hours of challenges.
