To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.
The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.
Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

voice acting was not that bad.
graphics are kinda ok but very heavy on bloom, recommend turning off fullscreen effects for this.
why the low stars? well the combat was odd, waiting on annimations to finish before being able to react.

A medium-length game with okay graphics and dated combat mechanics, but boy does it have charm.
I had to download a 4GB patch for this thing to stop crashing every 40 minutes, but whenever it worked it was actually a fun and immersive experience.
I would recommend this game to those who don't mind their games being a little clunky, because when you get past that hurdle, there's an interesting world, a serious story and funny characters hidden beneath it.
Venetica is a difficult title. On the one hand, it has that great combination of simplicity of story and pleasing mechanics that make for a great aRPG, just like Kingdoms of Amalur. On the other hand, the implementation of the game is rushed, poorly balanced, poorly tested, and in some situtations downright infuriating.
The RPG part of the game is decent. 3 different weapons (and for some reason a 4th that is just a copy) offer some variation in playstyle, and the basic talents available with levelups will enhance these and make them more satisfying. "Spell" talents are mostly useless but offer a more story-focused development. The basic combat is satisfying in many cases, though the lack of testing and refinement also results in multiple scenarios being highly frustrating, and often only solveable by cheesing or abusing flaws in the primitive "AI".
The game initially hypes "twilight energy", a power source that seems intrinsic to the story and the character development, but after the initial hype it is never mentioned again, and serves only a single use with no regards to resource management or development.
The story is incredibly simple and lacks any and all depth. This is fine by me, as I mostly played it for the mechanics and character development. The voiceovers are cringeworthy, but sometimes made me laugh.
So, to sum it up. The ideas are good here, and if the game had received the time and resources needed it would have been a solid and well received title. As it is, I can only recommend it as a time-waste if you are desperate for a new aRPG (like I am).
Really interesting game with lot's of interesting gameplay mechanics, an interesting story and a not perfect but still good good/evil system.
The main limit of this game is the lenght... too long for the actual content, in the first part you really want to go on with the game, but by the end you just really want to finish it as soon as possible.
Also there are weapons that are too good and weapons that are too bad... the sword is really bad compared to shied and lance.
I like the idea of a gameover only after multiple death explained by the story, and also the ability to ignore good people advice and do evil things without any consequences.
Try to if cheap.
I spend some time into the game. It was fine at all, the story was good and I liked the characters.
But after a bug crushed my savegame and I would have to replay sereval hours, I quit without seeing the end of the game. Somewhat sad, but that bug was to serve to be ignored.
