Way better than negative reviews suggest

... especially given the circumstances the devs had to face during planning and production. Most reviews are highly subjective. This one as well. I enjoyed the game. The art was really good, the atmosphere was consistent, gritty, dark, dipping into creepy, backed strongly by the music. I had no gripe with gameplay/mechanics, though some elements felt less rewarding/focused - but overall it was a solid story and adventure with enough great elements to keep the game engaging, cohesive, interesting and well paced - certainly enjoyable. I would have appreciated a more established storyline for the relationship between Erin and Garrett - which is a focus in the game, driving quest and outcome - as well as for the mystery of the city and the "power" material. (There is a comic titled "Thief - Tales from the City" giving a bit more context - you can find a decent read on Youtube.) The side characters were neat - I even would have welcomed more interactions between e.g. Garrett and Basso or the Queen of Beggars, learning a bit about their turfs and ways. The City itself.also deserves mention as a character. My only real gripe is the tiresome traversing of the city, usually from one far end to the other and back. I enjoyed the sneaking, and would not have resorted to fighting in a stealth game, if the following was done right: The city is a big, higly patrolled, segmented maze, with not all showing up on the map. Challenge for wayfinding is truly fun (at first), but once found - with such scale and frequent back&forth tracking (esp. with side quests) - indicating crucial segment passages would have meant a lot less slog for me, and better chance of replay. That said, main missions each have their own huge one-time maps, so there's plenty exploration. All in all, I found this a good game on it's own terms. And if there will ever be a next Thief game, I hope it will be an even better one.

Quite Average

The developers were smart not to make this part of the original continuity, but found a balance by setting it far in the future from the those games. There are many good features to like in Thief, but they can't quite come together to replicate the feeling of the original games. They tried to add a more immersive, tactile feel to the game with the lock picking and breaking into windows, but the latter becomes repetitive and annoying as the game drags on. The voice actor for Garrett does a fair approximation of the original actor, who is still missed. If more time was spent in perfecting the game, it could have been a tremendous hit. Instead, the future of the series is still in doubt ten years after its release. Hopefully someone takes up the mantle and returns the series to its former glory.

very nice game

I played some of the previous Thief games (Thief 2 Metal Age and Thief 3 Deadly Shadows) and I loved this one as well. It's story driven, stealth-action game. Good gameplay music. You can free roam all the map and choose exactly when to start a mission. The map feels much bigger than the one in Thief 3, also you can do more free roam things. All Thief games on gog.com run on windows 10. Thief 2 feels more rewarding when looting and picking locks. Guards have words and bows. Thief 3 has the best the story, it reminds me of Harry Potter. THIEF: Definitive Edition has better music, better free roam map, it feels relaxing. Guards have swords and crossbows.

I liked it more than Dishonored

Dishonored as a series always annoyed me because of how judgmental it could be. Kill non-targets or raise alarms you get 'Chaos' which effects the endings, so there's only one real way to play. This game dispenses with the morality and just allows you to sneak and steal which is everything I wanted anyway. Also I think the graphics are much better and the characters more likable. This is NOT much like the original Thief games, granted, but some carryovers are welcome. You have gadgets to disable light sources and guards. You need to pay attention to your light gem and avoid loud surfaces or running when anyone is in earshot. The one big issue I had was this is a pretty railroaded experience. You cannot jump down or jump up unless the game lets you so you're less in a playground and more like a series of condensed jungle gyms, but luckily there's stuff to find off the beaten path and you can always replay levels for achievements or missed loot if you want to. I just prefer the gloomy, drizzly, high contrast city with a grounded steampunk feel to the weirdness of other similar games. The soundtrack is nice, the controls are responsive, and on highest settings it ran fast and fluid. Not disappointed at all, actually quite impressed!

Decent, should have been MUCH better

From my Steam review. I'd give it 3/5, but it's more like 3.8/5. Definitely the worst Thief game thus far, although it's not outright bad, it's just disappointing and shallow compared to previous games. In short: + Combat is simple and ditches the sword that Garrett shouldn't be carrying around in the first place, because it's cumbersome, and he's a Thief. + New Swoop ability to quickly & silently move between shadows + Upgradeable equipment + Decent lockpick system + The asylum level + Visuals are good minus some muddy textures / Most focus upgrades are nearly useless, there's only about 2 worth getting / Guards will sometimes spin in place at the speed of light, which is really funny, so not exactly a negative for me / Third person Prince of Persia style parkour system that's used like a grand total of 6 times in the entire game, which seems like kind of a waste to even implement. - Contextual BS that will end up annoying you (PEAK) - Levels ain't exactly big, open, and sprawling - Confusing to navigate hub world, map doesn't list proper entrances/exits clearly - Slow to open window transitions that won't tell you if it's a level load or not - Picking up loot and opening drawers is slow - Can't mount on any ledge and rope arrows have very specific points where they work, although climbing is faster. - Game runs a bit like bricks, specifically in some of the hub areas, although it never crashed for me. - Sound system is a bit f***ed - Why do I have to hold a button for 5 seconds to knock out a stunned enemy in combat, I guess it's to punish the player for alerting guards? - Points of no return that don't tell you they're points of no return. - Garrett isn't voiced by Stephen Russell, it's like Resident Evil not using Court for Claire, or MGS not using Hayter for Snake all of a sudden, why. If you want something that's closer to an actual Thief 4, try The Dark mod, it's free and really good. Dishonored is also a game with Thief elements, it's fantastic.
