Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.
As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.
Garrett never paid the price for anything… until now.

Thief: Tales From The City digital comic (EN/FR) & OST
I've played the first Theif, it's old but excellent, and set the ground work for stealth games as a genre.
For this game to be officially be a successor to Theif and its sequels is honestly sacrilegious.
This is a basic, stripped down, bare bones, utterly inferior game. Blind, stupid guards. An inability to stash bodies in cupboards. Awkward controls.
However, the atmosphere and visuals are incredible. Maybe some of the best creepy atmospheres I've encountered in a game, yet in a game that has the sloppiest mechanics. Almost the opposite of Theif that has very basic graphics today, but still has very good mechanics.
I enjoyed this game and its aesthetic. Incredible voice acting. Great dialogue between guards. Great world building in the documents you pick up. But the most important part of the game, the gameplay, has been gutted. Play this game like a ride through a cool industrial tudor world, not a stealth game like Splinter Cell, Dishonored or the first 3 Theif games.
This is not trying to be exactly the same as the trilogy and so should not be judged as such. I do think some of the changes go a little too far. I've seen some compare this Garrett to the Crow and there's definitely some truth to that it's just a bit too emo and or goth. I don't think Erin is necessarily a terrible idea but we do end up with the character who spends a lot of time talking about her pain. I think it would work a lot better if there was at least a little bit more depth there. Though I do respect that there probably is a number of sad teenage girls who vibe with this franchise. I really appreciate that this does not get completely taken over by the grappling hook and such. I was a little concerned about that when it first popped up. Also I know some people really don't like that tapping space twice and then moving in a direction allows you to move fairly fast and yet fairly quiet regardless of what material you're on. Please keep in mind the game never actually forces you to use this. It's there to open it up to people who are not yet ready to meet the, let's be honest, at times fairly intense challenge of the trilogy even on easy difficulty settings. I like most of the additions. Looking for hidden panels, breaking into a safe, that sort of thing. The story is quite engaging. I really appreciate that this doesn't undo any of the trilogy. It also doesn't expect players to know. Like, there's a couple of little tidbits for us long time fans but this could easily be the first you play. I don't think that a sequel to the trilogy, one that was very directly tied to those, is particularly likely. I just don't see how you follow up the perfect ending of Deadly Shadows other than this sort of soft reboot thing. This honestly might be the one that does the best job of finding a way to drag Garrett kicking and screaming into contact with the plot without it feeling ridiculously contrived. Let's be honest, that's always been a bit of an issue for this series.
Design in general is bad, a lot of frustrating instances, atmosphere is very monotonous with almost no sense of dread.
On the other hand, the graphics and sound quality is quite good.
Dialogue and content are vulgar for the sake of being vulgar, not really achieving anything.
All in all it has a lot of potential, but falls short on most points.
This game is fair, not great. If you get it on sale for a few dollars, like me, it's worth it. I enjoy the sneaking around and the atmosphere. I've been skipping the story for the most part and just enjoying it for what it is...a mediocre stealth game I bought for a few bucks.
This game has established the go-to way for me to experience stealth games. The 1st person view makes sneaking, listening to your environment but also switching from cover to cover or shadow to shadow absolutely intense. Loved everything about it.
Also the controller support is top-notch with almost(!) perfect force feedback. Lock-picking gives you the option to listen and look around with your right stick, while searching for the right spot with the left stick and resp. force feedback. When guards are patrolling around you, this creates an incredibly intense atmosphere.
Besides the parcour movement, which is also present, feels great and reminded me a lot of Dying Light 2 - minus the Kung Fu Style Drop Kicks of course, LOL.
Honorable mention for the puzzles, some were done great, with my favorite being the "Heart of the Lion".
That's for the positive, which kept me coming back for more.
Now the downsides, which almost made me uninstall and quit my playthrough:
The story switches from intriguing and fascinating - chapters 3 and 4 were my absolute favorites with their memorable set pieces - to predictable and boring after the 5th act. Which is being amplified by bad pacing. Latter one is making the last 1.5 chapters feel kinda "irrelevant" and made me wishing for the game to end, which was kinda unfortunate.
When it comes to story presentation: Some of the cutscenes, which are not presendet in-engine, but via videos, look kinda bad. Some are even interupted (or haven't been completed rendering during production?! LOL)
which doesn't do the the main issue with the story any favors.
You also have two boss fights, which feel out of place and kinda bad.
From the tech perspective: XBox pads only.
Having a PS4 or PS5 like pad? The did not work for me.
But on the other hand the performace in 4k Is amazing with all maxed out, making the game quite amazing and radiating incredible atmosphere.
Long Story short: Great game, bad narrative. If you like stealth game experiences and environmental puzzles, I'd highly suggest to NOT SLEEP ON THIS!
Especially on sale.
