The Settlers® 4: Gold Edition

i love this game it brings me back to my younger years when i had no worries in the world. i use to come home from school and no matter how good or bad my day was i would switch on this game and just forget everything. that was 30 years ago, now i have a mortgae, kids, wife, work and i feel more stressed than anytime in my life. i switch on this game now and play for a few hours every month and just reminisce of when i use to first play this game long ago almost wishing i could go back and be a kid forever

Well, so much for Gog being good once upon a time. Not anymore. Second game that wont play....what the hell!!!

Pros : Game mechanics, well programmed, depth to the economy full of unique challenges. I also like the 2d graphics, old school sprites. Its cute looking and pleasant dinky game. Huge maps, hundred of levels in multiple different story modes, 4 or 5 different factions with their own graphics and other unique buildings etc. Depth in the gameplay and the game can be HARD. I'm on easy mode struggling to get past the 2nd romans mission in single player. I love the DRM free nature of GOG games as well, its helped me a lot to play games offline on my windows 7 hard drive. I like that this runs on windows 7, not a fan of windows 10. This game is so old school it comes with a very well done pdf manual. There are multiple pdf manuals to tell you everything you need to know about this game. Game runs well on windows 7, no issues whatsoever that I've come across. This game is so old school that you need to go into the games actual files to access the level editor, I haven't used it yet but it has the ability to randomly generate levels and adjust the size of the maps and how many players for the map etc, starting resources etc. This game is a masterpiece of programming of the era. Everything works and works well, snappy fast smooth. So glad this game still exists in a form compatible with modern tech. Cons : Some very small minor bugs that will never be fixed most likely because this game is over 20 years old. For example on Trojans mission 1 I could not load my troops into my boat... Not sure why so I had to cheat to end the level. Also the community still playing this game in 2023 doesn't exist. Its you and me whoever is reading this. That makes searches of strategy and things like that online hard to find. But, the documentation coming with the game is outstanding. Another con, couldn't find a way to delete savegames in the game, you have to delete those from the game folder and same thing with renaming save files.

It now works on my win10 laptop without any needing for further messing with the files^^ hopefully the update works for more people. (previously i had needed to google my problem until i found some forums speaking of getting dxwnd or some shit to get it to work, now it's just install and play as it should be )

I must admit the graphic really isn't the best but after you play a little you don't bother anymore at all! I love playing this game over Lan with friends! Though i couldn't find the map editor which should be coming with the mission CD which is included in the gold edition :( Someone else having this problem?
