A Marvelous Piece of Art.
I'm typically not the type for a mystery game; while detective work was high on my list of priorities in my youth, I've deviated from that. Now though, I thought I'd give it a try with this game. While real life doesn't have time travel (I've tried the "Time Travel to Now" trick; we never find it), I've found myself invested in this game far more than most others I've played. The story does follow similar story beats to the mod it's based on, but it builds upon it with new twists and turns, characters, and actual climbing mechanics. The changes made were impactful to my overall experience, and I found myself genuinely surprised and gasping - actually gasping - at most of the twists, and laughing at a few points as well. The writing made each character feel unique, with appropriate voice acting from each VA. While I didn't find myself going back and talking to each character, I still appreciated talking to them and learning about them. Despite this, there were a few drawbacks; not enough for me to not give it a lower score, but enough I was annoyed. First of which, there was the palace: I can't get back in. Maybe it's my ineptitude, but I want to go back into the palace a second time to see if anything changes, but the game won't allow me to. Secondly, some of the dialogue options don't follow continuity with the story; I can make a character do a certain thing for me, but others will ignore it and continue on as if it never happened. They're few and far between, but still something that bugged me. While there were problems with The Forgotten City, they were outweighed by well executed twists, deviations from the original source material, along with great writing and execution by the voice actors, not to mention the heavy questions of "what is right?". With that said, I highly recommend The Forgotten City.
