A deeply atmospheric platformer
After the Battle for Bikini Bottom remake (2020) and the slightly off-beat Cosmic Shake (2023), developer Purple Lamp has perfected their SpongeBob platforming formula with this third entry. The return of Patrick as a playable character and the careful addition of new game mechanics already make this game excel in the mascot 3D platformer genre. Their faithful approach to recreating the humor of the show and the story beats of a typical episode continues in this installment, cementing the small Austrian studio's status as just about the perfect handlers of the SpongeBob license. The dynamic music, still handled by some of the same composers as the original Battle for Bikini Bottom from 2003, takes a notable step up together with the overall sound design. Patrick's sound effects especially feel very satisfying, and the jazzy soundtrack adapts its instrumentation according to the character played and the setting of the level. The graphical presentation makes use of Unreal Engine 5's new lighting system, thereby taking the slightly more open sceneries to a new level. But where this game really shines and goes from great to almost perfect, is in its story and atmosphere. Whereas Battle for Bikini Bottom had a rather basic background plot leading the characters to well-known set pieces from the cartoon, and The Cosmic Shake stuck to putting a new twist on these already established areas with a slightly more involved plot, Titans of the Tide not only features a fully developing story arc over the course of its 6-8 hour runtime, it also expands the SpongeBob universe through adding new lore for lesser-known characters like the Flying Dutchman and King Neptune, as well as by taking place in areas that are either completely new (like Goldfish Island) or have never been explored thoroughly in the show (like Neptune's castle). Titans of the Tide explores these new areas with such a sense of charme and creativity, that it really feels like a playable SpongeBob movie.
