Soldier of Misfortune

It's a step back from all previous Soldier of Fortune games. I'm guessing it was some other game rebranded as SoF so Activision could cut their losses on what was obviously a bad game. Character movement feels like early bad Doom clones. AI is not well balanced. Gunplay is okay, albeit unrealistic with virtually no recoil. You would think this was made in 1998, but apparently it came out in 2007. It's just mind boggling to think we'd already had Half Life 2 and Doom 3 by this point, heck SoF 1 had come out by that point. There are a few moments of fun where you feel like you are mowing down baddies and you feel kind of awesome, but then there are frustrating moments where enemies are shooting at you from who knows where. No one would be playing this game today if it weren't for the SoF legacy. The worst part is the game isn't too bad, but then all the sudden in the last mission (about 3 levels) it's insane. There's enemies that kill you in one hit, and then two really bad bosses. The real challenge of the final two bosses was figuring out how to cheese them, other than that they would just kill you in one hit. Should you play it? No. Will you play it? If you are like me and just want to finish the trilogy, then yes.

I wonder why!?

GAME IS NOT playable in this state.. Canno't hit enemies at first map even if blasting them from 1 meters away...This is the worst of the worst SOF...

Avoid this one, Play SOF 1 & 2 instead

Oh my... this is painful to even write a review. If it was possible to Give 0 of 5 stars, that would still be too much. Getting the game for free would still be too expensive. Only reason I have this game Soldier of Fortune Payback was because it was cheaper to buy the SOF Triple pack when it was on sale than the games individually. Im only playing it to say I did, regret playing it and shelve it permanently. The only things that this game has good going for it (for its particular time period of release) is the graphics and physics (Havok Engine - same used in many games like Fallout 3 & 4, Oblivion & Skyrim). Everything else is really really bad or way over the top. Story / Background - very dull. Your Radio Comms NPC and Players Voicing kills any depth or momentum it has right away. Gameplay - Its one of the worse in terms of controls and mechanics. - Basic movements up, down, strafe left, strafe right and mouse movement are the only thing normal, except no way to deactivate Mouse Acceleration In-Game. So you gotta remember to lower your Mouse DPI instead. - Keys cannot be rebound in-game and must be done at the config file, but that is limited to very few keys and Mouse1 & 2. - Ladders are not designed and scripted well, its like you just slide up and down, still holding your guns with 2 hands or ADS. - Sprinting is Tight and narrow, you cannot make any turns, just pretty much running in a straight line for about 5 seconds. - Enemies have scripted spawns that make them pop out of nowhere, this wouldnt be a problem in a pathed encounter, but when you clear an area or find an area that is 3 walls or no entry visible, leave and then start getting shot up from that area by 2-3 enemies that spawned in; thats a problem. Gunplay - Guns are a stiff mess... Ragdolls are Great, but decapitations over exaggerated like a Tarantino film. Avoid, dont even watch YT playthroughs. It brings nothing to the series, even its story.

Good luck hitting anything

I loved Soldier of Fortune 1. I liked the second one a lot even though the new damage models were wonky. This one is nearly unplayable, which explains why I never knew that it ever came out and instantly regretted the purchase. The graphics and damage modeling are good for the year this came out and would be satisfying if it mattered at all where you aimed. I can't even stand playing far enough to judge any story or other maps that this might have, I didn't even push through the first. I stood point blank to an enemy and went through an entire clip and died without hitting the enemy, that should tell you how atrocious the hit boxes are. It's as if hitting an enemy is all based on a low probability dice roll and not on where you're aiming. You're more likely to hit an enemy if they're completely in the open, but if they're on a rooftop or anywhere near an obstruction even if they're almost completely in the open, they're near impossible to hit. When you do hit and kill an enemy, there's a good chance that the body will fly across the map. The physics in this game is completely ridiculous. Don't buy this, save your money. Just replay the first and second game for the nostalgia.
