The great freedom of action in Crimes & Punishments allows you to conduct your investigations in the manner you deem appropriate. Use the 14 extraordinary skills of detection for which Sherlock is famous, choose the avenues of enquiry you wish to pursue, interrogate your suspects and, from your deductions, name the guilty parties... you can even determine their fate! The ramifications are far-reaching, and your decisions will exert a real influence through your reputation or the surprising consequences that will arise where you least expect them…
I bought the game on Sale for approximly 10 Bucks and it was worth every Penny. The Gameplay is nice, the cases are puzzeling and interesting. The best Part about the cases is the decisions that you can make. Should a murderer hang or get to prison? Can murder be justified? "Crimes and Punishment" confrontes you with such question and will maybe reverse your view of "justice".
This isn’t your normal linear adventure. You have to figure out the identity of the true culprit by yourself, based on the facts and details that you gather or deduce as you progress through the case. I love this mechanic, since it’s actually forces you to think instead of mindlessly going along with the plot while just solving puzzles. In the game, no single fact or detail could be used to prove the guilt of any suspect “beyond reasonable doubt”. So, you are expected to make up your own solid chain of logic to decide the true culprit’s identity (and possibly method, if it’s required). The problem is, the correct decision isn’t always backed by an iron chain of logic. So, thinking too much about the case will probably lead you to picking the incorrect decision, and thinking just enough (ignoring some inconsistencies, or illogical things here and there) will probably lead you to picking whatever the developers had in mind (in other words, the correct decision). This is not a good design whatsoever. However, there are only two cases in the game that truly suffer from this. Overall this is a good and immersive game, considering the limited means of the developer.
Guess it's too old or something, but I get crashes now and then when in deduction space (many other threads about those and no solution for that).
What's worse is that I, and some others, got stuck on case #4 (out of 6) and no solution there either, so I uninstall it now.
I'm glad for the first three cases though cause they were really really good!
And all cases are separate stories so I'm not missing the ending so to speak.
Great buy on a sale, but beware it isn't very stable for some!
Why don't the devs adapt more Conan Doyle short stories like they did here ?
This game is not perfect (it remains a medium-scale production) but it is objectively the best written of the series which went into high gear with the use of a new game engine and reached a certain ideal in terms of gameplay.
If the latter was perfected in the following episodes, the investigations were duller and the "open world" orientation quite useless.
Here the investigations are varied, captivating and well put together (even those that are not from "the canon" of Sherlock Holmes) and the game is replayable because of its open character.
My favorite by far in the Sherlock Holmes series from the Frogwares studio (I also recommend "Sherlock vs. Jack the ripper").
The voice acting, animation and atmosphere were perfect. The game really gave the player the feel of being Sherlock Holmes. The puzzles and mini-games were generally good, and most had the option of being skipped (avoiding a common failing with many adventure games which stop a player from progressing if the mouse is not clicked fast enough the right way). The story was entertaining and thought-provoking. The process of putting the clues together was good. The game was quite clever in allowing the player to come to very different conclusions depending on the way the player interpreted the evidence. A highly recommended game!
