Mechanical overload
As a lover of detective games, Crimes and Punishments is my favorite in the series, and in my opinion possibly the best detective game ever made. I loved being able to interpret the the evidence myself, and come to my own conclusion based on that, even if it meant occasionally messing up and accusing the wrong person. In fact, being able to be wrong was what made the detective role feel so real. I love the fact that these developers seem genuinely invested in pushing the genre in new directions, seeing what else is possible. I was not a fan of The Devil's Daughter for art direction and story reasons, as well as the minigame mechanics. But I was glad that they kept the self contained case and investigation mechanics from the previous game none the less. With the story effectively being restarted, I came into this game with raised hopes. Now that I have completed it, here is what conclusions I have drawn: Investigation and mind map mechanics are still present a la C&P. You still have the ability to make deductions and accuse several suspects. The side cases vary in their complexity: Some are full on investigations, some just crime scene inspections. Some more involved, some very simple. The open world aspect of the game was neither a plus nor a minus in my book. The environment was pretty, a nice departure from the ever familiar London streets, a welcome change of pace. There was only one real downside in my view: All the new mechanics. In their attempt to further try and push the envelope, the devs have created a slew of new mechanics to add variety to the investigations. Unfortunately not all of them are a success. Eavesdropping just feels random, evidence pinning and asking random civilians adds complexity that seems needless, and the chemistry system seems overdeveloped as well. Combat did eventually grow on me, but it still felt out of place for the genre. The accessibility (difficulty) options can help mitigate some, if not all of these. Solid 4 stars.
