Steady old car with fresh coat of paint
Quick review for those unfamiliar with the game: Rogue Trooper is a comic book series adapted into a third person cover based shooter. It focuses on the titular character attempting to hunt down the Traitor General who in a shocking twist, betrays his own side and ends up ensuring the death of all of Rogue's comrades. The shooting is solid conceptually and in execution. Which is good, seeing as how its what the moment-to-moment gameplay is based on. There are mutiple weapons based on different attachments to the main gun, and the main gun has different tech tricks you can perform with it. As one example, the player can deploy the gun as a automatic turret and create crossfire while only controlling one soldier. Getting new guns and toys is based on a salvage system, where dead enemies and piles of trash can be used to convert into generic resources. These resources in turn can become upgrades and ammo. For those new to the game, its a well recommended 7.5/10, rounded up to 4 stars for GOG. Unambitious, but the game does well at it aims too. Now for those who played this game before: Graphics: Range from quite nice looking to better, but not that much better. NPC models look okay, but level geometry remains untouched, and therefore is quite angular and jutting. Lighting can be a treat, texture work is nicely detailed, but the game world can feel a bit barren compared to more modern games with more clutter. The biggest tell for the game's age are the completely untouched animations, which prove most akward looking in the games cutscenes. The game is now native widescreen, and flawless goes to whatever resolution fits your monitor. So that's nice. Sound: Pretty much untouched. Controls: Tweaked. Cover is now automatic, which works 95% of the time. Grenades can be only thrown a fixed distance now, but micro mines are the same. Summed up: Mild to nice improvements, but nothing life changing. Also some minor bugs added, at the time of this writing.
