FPS at its finest, a golden milestone.

There ain't much to say when talking about quake II: it is simply 3D FPS at its finest. Although of all the series I personally prefer the first entry for its strange and unique settings, Quake II is absolutely perfect in every single way: interesting design of enemies, weapons and overall style, addictive and without flaw gameplay, even the story (which is not something you would consider) it adds perfectly to the other features of this game. I won't spend any more time describing the features or what kind of impact this game had on the whole videogame industry.... But I will say this: its an instant-buy, a masterpiece must-have in every single library, for every single player.

FPS Games Made Right

Quake II is one of my all time favorite games and the Quake and Doom series are on the top of my list, I actively play both even in 2017. Quake II is one of the games that set a standard that all FPS started to follow in terms of strafing and mobility trumps tactical decisions. The multiplayer requires true skill and is still fun to play with a group of friends. The campaign tells a story although not a really in depth one and you gather most of it from reading your PDA and listening to the radio chatter throughout the game. I own the game and it's two mission packs: The Reckoning and Ground Zero already and on disc so I had no need to purchase this game a second time. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes the FPS genre and likes a fun game altogether.

A Second Serving

Initially, I thought Quake 2 was just another throwaway Sci-Fi shooter. It may not be as unique as The Offering, but that doesn't mean that what we got isn't superb in its own right. You know the drill: run, jump, and shoot your way through some of the best-designed levels in shooter history. What's Quake 2 got to offer that the competition doesn't? The AI was the first to grab my attention. Sure, half of them shoot from afar and the other half run at you with hacksaws, but it's the details that matter. Like a soldier picking up their sidearm and taking a few pot shots at you before kicking the bucket, or blasting off a Strogg's head so they shoot wildly into their former allies. The levels are a standard id Software affair (i.e., great) and even though I miss the Cthulu horrors from The Offering, I gotta say a lot of the Strogg look great. Plus the engine is leaps and bounds more impressive (and stable) than the last iteration. The expansions are more of the same. As good as the base game is, both The Reckoning and Ground Zero feel gratuitous. There's a lot of reskins and overlapping weapons/powerups. The level design is blatantly amateurish compared to vanilla. If you're going to get the base game (and you should), you might as well give the expansions a try. Don't expect anything mindblowing.

We just lost a third of the platoon!

Base game is decent if you don't mind the industrial style interiors, but you're fighting human mechanical hybrid monsters so it makes sense they wouldn't be interested in interior design. Best played on Hard or nightmare even then not that difficult. Story is meh. You alone are going to destroy the strogg home world. Just like any 80s action movie then! Game makes you feel like you're in a war zone at the start. Ships overhead audibly thunder overhead and snippets of radio crackle in your ears. The intro cut scene is a real gem. This feeling of being part of your team fades towards the end as you take on the evil overlord boss... ...in space. It's actually really fun. Grenades and super shotgun sound really satisfying even today. Enemies do duck in open spaces when you shoot at them, some run away from grenades, others revive fallen comrades and enemies shoot their weapon with their dying breath. Most have fairly obvious tactics and a lot of the ranged enemies are easier close up if you can get close. Flies congregate over killed enemies. You can run and gun (most fun) or you can play it tactical as your entry weapon, the blaster has unlimited ammo and can be used to snipe far off enemies. Good amount of secret areas and couple of hidden levels is still a fun novelty. Some outdoor bits and some sections in mines. Stroggos is certainly not a place for a holiday vacation. A lot of oppressive architecture and brown / grey pallet. Quake 2 uses a lot of assets from the first game while being nothing like it. You'll notice recycled sound effects and objects. It's not a bad thing. Quake 2 is it's own game really. Quake 2 is a bit slow. You'll probably end up turning always run to on. It doesn't really change the genre a whole lot. Maybe some day they'll re-boot the strogg lore in an old school re make. Never really liked the expansions personally, but they're worth playing for some extra levels / different weapons and enemies. Multiplayer in quake 2 is a lot of fun.
