I love this game. And it pisses me off.

I love this game. It's my favorite of the series and I desperately want to give it 5 stars. I really, really wish I could give this game 5 stars. But I can't. This game pisses me the fuck off more than any other game. Because it doesn't let you save your own game. You must rely on the game's autosave. Quick save does nothing. And this is done on purpose on the game's Ranger Hardcore setting. If I wanted to rely on the autosaves, I just wouldn't save my game. However, when I die time and time again during a certain combat encounter, I want to be able to save my game when I finish the encounter. I do not want to finish it, finish the entire side quest, leave, and then die because my van went over a hill that was slightly too big for it, only to have to start the entire side quest over from the top because the game refused to save itself. If the game weren't good, I'd just uninstall it and be done with it. But because the game is so good, when I lose nearly an hour's worth of progress because the game won't let me save my game, I'm not just disappointed, I'm livid. And I can't recommend a game that makes me that mad.

hints of excellence

like the first 2 Metros, this is heavy on atmosphere, but just in a far more open world, with the usual travelling location to location on missions, interspersed with small skirmishes with the mutated wildlife, and managing limited ammo at times. on hard difficulties it's more like sneaking than walking, as the enemies will be tough, and ammo even more limited. i played this game on Xbox console, and even on the console, this game is utterly gorgeous. it must look wonderful on a PC. on the console i never had a single bug or crash, but it sounds like the PC version is different. movement through the world felt good, and the story is mostly the typical apocalyptic cliches. what makes this game one of my favourites in years is the attention to detail the devs have obviously lovingly crafted into the game. NPC AI is top notch, but more surprisingly, the work put into the wildlife is just as good. on a couple of occasions, running from overwhelming numbers, i would hide and a group of animals would get distracted from their pursuit of me by a different pack. what ensued each time would be a stand off the likes you would see on a wildlife channel, with the dynamic constantly shifting. these would last a good 5 minutes at a time. this kind of effort in a game is incredibly rare. what results is very believable adventure that i personally felt completely engrossed in.

Great story. Not so great mechanics

I rate this game 5 despite rusty controls and very common and simple mechanics just because of the great story. It's so great that it makes everything else fade. If you like single-player storyline games - this is on of the best. And Ukrainian version, appreciate it. Was waiting for this game to appear on GOG

Good, game and story. Yet so unstable...

I have had a lot of problems with this game. It refuses to boot and makes me launch it in safe mode, whatever, at least it still works right? Well for about an hour then it will freeze and hover around ~ 2 gigs of ram. I'm forced to use task manager to kill the application. How come modded Fallout: NV crashes less than this game? If you aren't bothered by crashes then this game is pretty good. I get good frames and the loading times are very fast on an SSD, just don't alt tab because it really affects the stability of the game.

atmospheric, heavy, great story, honestly one of the best games out there, and the best one of the Metro series. I can't recomend it enough.
