Borderline unplayable

There is so much slowdown and lag happening constantly, even with barely anything happening on the screen. If you try to jump and shoot downward with a machinegun it will lag for like half a second, even with no enemies on the screen, and the framerate will drop to half. This is completely unacceptable for a game running on hardware with 21 years of advancements over its original version.

Game freezes every 3 seconds

No idea why, but the game freezes for a second every 3 or 4 seconds. I've tried different resolutions, windowed/non windowed, running as admin, re-installing as admin, compatibility mode, but it still lags every 3 or 4 seconds. My computer is pretty beefy, and my drivers are up to date. Oh well, good thing I bought it super cheap on sale.

Can be improved, but it is still awesome

It is an emulated port with custom graphical frontend. This is something that you can get for free, but this is your chance to get it legally, especially if it is on discount. As for the game itself, it is exemplary shooter! Nice hand drawn graphics, lots of animation frames, great sounds, excellent music, great action, even better overall atmosphere! Could be better if SNK did conversion of this game, add some HD material and improve controlling scheme a bit. Controlling is a bit clunky, but the arcade version has the same problem (I spent hours and hours on arcade and problem is persistent there as well). Luckily, first Metal Slug does not require such advanced reflexes. Other Metal Slugs have this problem solved as those games are quite challenging.

A shame

Classic game, awefull port Co-op is unplayble : FPS drop by ~15 every ten seconds. Same thing in solo mode, when bullets fly everywhere. I recommend to play this awesome serie on the Wii version, not this one...

Still a good game!

The game is good but it wasn’t what I remember. My memory of this game had some of the levels in this game, but it was missing the big crab part and the end part in space. I guess it must have been a different metal slug game. The Good The graphics. The pixel art is one of the best that you’ll ever see. Back then when I first played a metal slug game, I thought it was amazing and it still is. The art style for the game is unique. There’s a lot of options for the game. I turned off the video filter because it made the game blurry. Like, it made it look old and that was cool, but I prefer a clear sharp pixel perfect look. The game was easy and short. You can rebind controls. You can play multiplayer online. You can infinitely respawn. You should know, that metal slug games were made for the arcade. The game was designed to be difficult on purpose to try and make more money. Basically, kill the player and force them to pay up to continue the game or not finish the game. Ever since they started porting the games to consoles, it made the games a much more enjoyable experience. The Bad The game has clear slow down. It doesn’t ruin the experience but you know, you kinda wish that it wasn’t there. Only good thing about it, is that when it happens, you can dodge attacks easier. When I was using the game in fullscreen mode, it made it impossible to record the game with obs studio. When you alt tab, it even messes up a bunch of other windows by making them bigger. I don’t think the crt effect is good. There’s no story. Just kill things and get to the end of the level. Conclusion I think it is a really great game. It’s fun and it doesn’t take that long to beat. Currently, this is the only legal way to play the game and support it, so that the company can see that we are still interested in this franchise and hopefully, they continue to make more of it but better. Good game.
