Brutal and Beautiful
GoNNER is a beautiful game with an awesome sense of style. Don't let it's simple design fool you though, it is pretty brutal and you'll die a lot... Like a lot a lot. That's okay though, it does a great job of dangling that carrot on a stick to keep you coming back for more. I've really enjoyed the experimentation of trying different combinations of weapons, heads, and accessories. Each of them can individually completely change the way you play the game and as you experiment with different load outs it can be a very different experience each time. Not to mention, the core mechanics of the game are spot on, making the process of trying out new things far less daunting and intuitive. I cannot say enough about how much I love the sound design in this game. The ambient and eerie tones fit the aesthetic of the game so well. As you build up your combo, you'll also notice the tempo of the music picks up, adding to that delicate balance of dread and delight. There's still a lot to discover and plenty of unknowns in the game. That is personally something I love in games. Binding of Isaac did a great job of throwing you into a world where you could understand the fundamentals of the gameplay, but as you collect and unlock more items you had to learn what works and what doesn't. GoNNER follows suit in a similar way, making discovery and experimentation an absolute joy. If you are a fan of platforming games of any type, get GoNNER... Seriously.
