Continuous disappointment

I have been let down by Paradox already few times but when I saw EU IV on Humble Bundle for dirt cheap with all of its DLC I decided to give them another chance. Boy was that a mistake. Not only did I find out that Epics support is as bad as at Steam, Paradox isn't much better at helping you either. Basically Paradox makes their "games" for Steam, everything else is just an afterthought. When you are going to have any issues, and you are going to have them quite soon, then go on Steam. Oh, it doesn't work for you, well it works on Steam. Oh, you have encountered bugs, what - it crashes, well, it works on Steam. Yeah, good luck with that. Honestly, don't expect any help from them if you aren't on Steam. This includes GOG as well. The game itself is buggy mess. If you want it to run smoother then you have to (and you absolutely have to) go through all the script files with a validator and fix their mess. But that's only partial solution since you can't fix anything in the exe or dll files. Not to mention that this isn't even a game. It's a petty platform to sell their petty DLCs. If you think that a horse armor is petty then look what Paradox has in store. I mean it's beyond ridiculous. Or even inappropriate. I have nothing against metal music but these bands aren't just bad, I wouldn't want to listen even well made metal in a historic strategy game. If you want muslims to look like muslims instead of like westerners, well there's DLC for that. Like what the serious f*ck? I have to admit that I spent too much time trying to get it to work. Modding itself can be quite fun by itself but in the end, if you have to spend so much time to get something to work, then mind as well make your own game from scratch. So if you have plans to take up game development at some point then modding is good place to start and that's the only thing Paradox junk is good for.

60 f*cking DLCs? Are you kidding??

Paradox is a f*cking scam company. Every single game they publish has at least a dozen DLCs, and it's almost always just content that's already in the game but locked behind a paywall. Stop buying Paradox games. This is a scam, not business model, and it needs to stop.

Once Good, Now Ruined

I played this game from release for a few years and it was great. It was perhaps my favorite game. A worthy successor to EU3. However Paradox ruined this game, and all of their subsequent releases with a horrible unrelenting greed. Each update include half implemented DLC mechanics that break the game unless you fork out $20 to buy what is little more than a small content patch. Horrendous DLC aside, they've just changed the game so much now. Its hardly the game I used to play. You can no longer play on older (better) versions so now I'm just done. This isn't a game you own. Its a game that paradox lends you for a few years until they destroy it. Even I wanted to play again, I'm 15 or so DLCs behind now. I'm not paying the cost of the game thrice over so I can continue playing something I bought years ago. I will never buy another Paradox game.

Not bad, but the DLC policy is rubbish

Well, this is probably the most disappointing Paradox game with Stellaris. Developers keep developing those game breaking previous mechanics that worked well. It doesn't enhance anything, it just get more and more easy and... boring with every new DLC. The colonial system being the worst mechanic I've ever seen in a grand strategy game. You just can cheese a whole continent (America) just because it's really badly programmed. As for diplomacy, it's as weak as previous games, mostly because AI has no intelligence. The lack of vision is the main problem. If you keep developing a game, the core mechanics shouldn't change all the time breaking previous saves you made as the game has changed way too much. If Paradox had a good vision of their project, they wouldn't break their mechanics at almost every DLC. This is a mess and not professional at all. Paradox used to make awesome Europa Universalis. This one is too be avoided, or maybe just buy the base game and avoid DLCs. All in all, it's an okay game using many previous game mechanics. As always, AI is completely dumb, so don't expect any challenge once you've understood how the game works.

A mess

On the one hand, Europa Universalis IV is a game of incredible breadth and incredible depth. The basic mechanics are solid, and Paradox achieved something with it that they've struggled to do in other games- they've managed to make most of the nations feel unique, with most countries getting unique perks, and more notable countries getting their own quest chains that nudge the player towards trying different strategies. It's a very different experience playing a country like France compared to a country like the Ottoman Empire, and they've also managed to make it viable (if challenging) to play smaller countries, or countries that in real-world history were squelched by bigger, more powerful states. On the other hand, the game is radically undermined by its DLC structure. Paradox's monetization model means that the game has received a constant stream of expansions post-release. Some DLCs- the best- add worthy new side mechanics to the game, which can further distinguish the game's countries mechanically- but inevitably, many are deeply unbalanced, undercut existing mechanics, add tedious busywork, or just seem generally pointless and confused. The quality of these DLCs has generally decreased over time, as Paradox has shifted its focus and manpower to other projects; they should have stopped putting them out long ago. Figuring out which DLCs are worth buying and which are best avoided is a challenge greater than anything the game can throw at you, and everyone will give you a different list of "good ones" and "bad ones." The profusion of DLCs has also made it much harder (and much more expensive) for new gamers to get into the game. I think that EU4 is, at core, a brilliant game, probably Paradox's best ever. But the crust of DLC that's built up on it means that I cannot recommend it unreservedly.
