Award-winning Passion Project
The game was first prototyped as an award-winning and much-loved student project. The original team has reformed and expanded as Fireplace Games to increase the scope, sweep and grandeur of En Garde!
This game is incredibly light-hearted and full of humor, and it's a lot of fun to stroll through.
Buuuut, combat is way to clunky.
It's got good gameplay ideas, mixing efficient use of the environment and rapier fighting... But the PC controls are too poorly managed.
Placing the Dodge on CTL is a bad move, camera tends to panic when there is more than 2 opponents on screen (there is an auto-lock mecanic which centers the view on your opponent when you get close to him... So when you're surrounded the camera doesn't know which target to follow and constantly switch between them)
With a controller, the game might be more enjoyable, but on PC it makes combat a headache, which is a problem when the gameplay is centered around it.
We looked at the colors and stance and thought it was a simple children's game. We bought it, how difficult is this game? It's definitely not for children and it's not fun either.
I say this as a person who logged ~150 hours of playtime on Sifu, I wish there was more depth.
I was hoping this could scratch the same itch Sifu did, and to its credit, it almost did. almost.
