Nice art...tries to be funny.

Here is our noir gritty detective...who is a chicken, and has a partner who is a cacti, and he tries to resolve the murder of...plants. Sounds hillarious right? I mean, this is some monkey Island level of absurd fun right? Well...no. Because the tone is jarring. Our character is dead serious, for him this is just a normal world, he does not acknowledge how riddicolous this whole premise is. And since we kind of are our character, we also start to treat this like normal everyday world. We meet quirky characters who are never acknowledged as quirky so we kind of assume that this is normal in this world. Maybe this is a matter of taste, but I love absurd, Sam&Max is my favourite series and you can hardly get more absurd than that, but in this game joke becomes tired very quickly. When you take away the absurd (and you quickly will, trust me, humans can adapt to anything) story becomes your run of the mill noir detective murder story. So what about gameplay? Puzzles are not really puzzles, this is once again "Use the plank on a tree so tree will speak to you and give you an acorn which you will trade for pizza and throw a pizza to distract the guard" adventure game cliche. I feel bad about reviewing this game since a lot of this is about personal taste, I mean maybe you will laught your face of... but let me warn you, it is a paint by numbers adventure game without any kind of logical puzzles and typical inventory "use everything on everything and hope that it sticks" except in this case it won't since you not only have to use correct item on correct hotspot but also do it in correct moment, if you have not talked to X do not even try to do Y cause it won't work. I will not talk about graphics or music since you can see it. I bought the game because it sounds like so much fun, everything promises you quirky adventure, but it is a lie. It is just typical murder story with strange graphics. My advice? Wait for sale and see for yourself, but no need to rush things.

Original and interesting, rough edges

Funny game with an interesting cast of characters and great art, but unfortunately falls a bit flat in the game design. The characters in particular in this game are actually quite memorable, which is saying a lot because I've played a lot of games and I remember most if not all characters from this game even weeks after playing it. The jokes are also pretty funny, especially if you dig noir and aren't put off by protagonists that can be a bit of a jerk. One area that I feel that the game suffers in though is general game design. The puzzles can for example be quite annoying for a number of reasons. The big one is that there are a small number of puzzles you can't solve before you do other arbitrary things before it, so even if you figure out the puzzle ahead of time because the game drops very obvious hints at you, you won't be able to solve it until you for example talk to a specific NPC and exhaust their dialogue tree. You'll erroneously assume your correct solution is wrong because the game refuses to let you do it, but that solution will magically start working with no warning once you do some other arbitrary thing. That said, I was never stuck for very long on a puzzle and once I understood what was happening to me it was easy to play through the rest of the game. I could see past this if the game came with a good hint system since I could just look up what it wanted me to do, but though the game comes with a built in hint system in its journal (you get a sticky-note with some hint-like information) it only updates sometimes and has literally never helped me with a puzzle I was actually stuck on. Overall, a good game and one I'd recommend to other point-and-click enthusiasts since it did scratch my itch, but not the first game I'd recommend to someone just getting into into the genre since it's not as accessible as other entries. :)

Short and Disappointing.

The artwork Is good and the voice acting is pretty decent but the writing is not very good. The dialog lines try to be funny but I found it to be a bit basic and dry. The Music is OK but forgettable. Overall I am underwhelmed and disappointed The game was also way too short.

A tedious adventure

Detective Gallo is a game primarily reliant on inventory puzzles, and you end up collecting a lot of items quickly. A good test for a well designed game is to see how far you can get into the game before you resort to "try everything you have in your inventory on everything else" or "try everything in your inventory on everything in the scene". In some cases, you'll know what you need to do, even trying the right combination of inventory items. However, because you failed to complete a required step, the response indicates that what you tried didn't work. After then completing the predecessor action, you have no reason to try the correct next steps again, since that already failed. The result is a frustrating game play experience. The puzzles are not designed well, and there is way too much backtracking to the same few locations. The game felt tedious very quickly. In some cases, solutions to puzzles just didn't make sense, with examples of both overly complicated setups and some that seemed like I was missing a few steps. To avoid spoilers, I won't list examples here. The game has an absurd premise - which isn't a bad thing. Otfen times this can contribute to a very funny adventure. The characters are also absurd and quirky. This sounds like a winning setup, but the main character treats this with absolute seriousness. This felt like wasted potential, as the game lacked much of the humor that I was expecting. Additionally, the game was short. You can expect 4-5 hours of gameplay. There was good character development for the lead, but none of the supporting characters felt well developed or complelling. Short and bitter...

Detective Gallo is a 2D point and click adventure game, in the vein of the old classics. Sadly, while it has a very nice art style, the writing grows tired pretty quickly, with the humour almost never moving beyond what you see in the intro. The story is bad, even by nonsense comedy standards. Suffice to say, you'll feel like you have solved nothing by the end of the game. Said ending also comes pretty quickly (I finished the game in around 4 hours). Despite being short, the amount of backtracking is disgusting, and the puzzles rarely will make you feel like you had a brilliant intuition. The jokes are uneven, with some good ones, and some not-so-funny ones. The game throws them at you constantly, so the ones that miss really hurt more than they should. Despite what people might say about the weird logic in old games like Monkey Island, I feel like they had a twisted logic and a nice comedy to them, which Detective Gallo doesn't always hit. The game is usually pretty direct in telling you what the end goal is, but the intermediate steps are so far removed, that you'll question whether you are really accomplishing anything at times. The presentation is the best part of the game. The low number of frames in most animations isn't enough to ruin them, and the artists managed to produce something nice to look at even with this limitation. Ultimately, the game is not bad, but it's neither funny enough nor does it have a compelling enough story to make it a worthwhile experience, unless you are a really big fan of point and click games. Games both recent and old offer much more, so it's hard to recommend investing your time in it. It's a pity, because it feels like with better direction, what was here could have been turned into a very good adventure.
