Good, But flawed

Deponia is a certainly clever game, the writing is on point, its paced well, and its very pretty, even if the faces do seem very similar. but that doesn't mean the game is perfect. first off the music is pretty repetitive, when i was frustrated i got tried of the fact that intro notes in kuvaq, as i was so frustrated with a certain puzzle. the puzzles aren't hard on their own, just a bit moon logic based, like using an embellishment with chewing gum to create a sling shot without ammo, and the game doesn't tell you that you can push space to show what items are clickable, so i felt like i was pixel-hunting at time when items just blend with the scenery. i also found the sound quality kinda off, some characters, but most especially the main love interest have a problem with mic quality, they sound recorded in a different room. but the major problem is the price and length, the game is very short, with me beating it in only 4 hours, but the game is priced at 10 dollars, not a horrible price, but it feels more like episode 1 of a series than a single game, and kinda asks you to buy games 2 and 3, which cost a good amount more and might have the same length, so asking for 50 dollars altogether is very unreasonable in my mind, the recommendation is to get the game with the sequels when they go on sale

Voice Actors Make A Difference

For me, one factor was crucial to the Deponia experience, and important enough to share in a review: Set the voice audio to German, play the game with subtitles! The Deponia series is a great example for what a difference voice acting makes. The English actors aren't bad, but they're horribly miscast (I felt the subtle sense of humor was raked over coals and the game's atmosphere became unsavory, grating, and cynical). I don't know German, but I loved the German voice actors for these games. Deponia is a very, very different place depending on what its characters sound like.

Wish it was better

So, I had high hopes for this based on reviews comparing it to things like Monkey Island. Sadly, MI it is not. Don't get me wrong, it's still a decent game, but it's never going to be a classic. The puzzle design is at times absolutely freaking nonsense and there were several cases where I either missed that something had TWO interactions associated with it (use item with and use on its own) or had to rub everything on everything else to work out what I needed to do. Some puzzles were logical, others were frustratingly obtuse or worse, the one thing you hadn't got right wasn't at all clear. There was a point where I had to use a dart gun and Rufus kept saying "yes, right distance." but not doing anything. I had to consult a walkthrough to learn I needed to go OUTSIDE. wtf? Why couldn't Rufus hint at that? It was funny in parts, but not laugh out loud funny. Rufus is a jerk but I don't mind jackass protagonists. I don't quite understand why Goal somehow "fell for him" after only 5 minutes though. What? Also the town's men all crowing to house the pretty lady in the tight jumpsuit was really uncomfortable and kinda creepy honestly. What was THAT about? "ooo pretty lady gimmie, she's mine" *puke* Hard to like a game that objectifies a woman like that and makes it out to be funny (A bunch of guys fighting over a girl like a piece of meat is NOT comedy, it's gross). I mean hell, she even has a chip in her head so you can knock her out and wipe her memories, how is that not super creepy? *shudder* Still, despite the unsettling subtext there, I found the plot interesting enough to want to play 2. The world is gorgeous and quite an interesting setup, i'd just like to see a lot less pervy bull and more intuitive puzzles. I like that you can skip the minigames, they're pretty tedious. I enjoyed the game apart from the pervy element, the rest was quite fun and end game was entertaining but goodness the puzzles... so unintuitive, so needlessly obtuse and random.

Quite enjoyable, even if not perfect

Bought during a sale, in order to try a few more recent point & click adventures, after some time away from the genre, so great value for the price. It reminds me a bit of the Monkey Island series for the humor, the kind of graphics, and also for the kind of puzzles (that made it miss the 5th star) of combining elements of inventory together or with the environment - sometimes almost logical (in its crazy way) sometimes a bit too goofy (finishing the game required a bit of internet cheating). Played in English, the voices are rather pleasant and easy to understand. The feature to show "hotspots" on each room/location is pleasant in order not to have to do pixel-object hunting. A lot of walking to do, and no clickable map to speed it up, fortunately double-clicking on exits allows to skip some of it, which saved the game from becoming tedious (and thus from getting only 3 stars). I got the 2 next ones, wanting to know what happens next, and will play them soon.

Slightly Frustrating But Good Game

If you've never played Point and Click games, I suggest not starting with Deponia as the puzzles are much more elaborated and complex. The graphics, sound, and voice acting are very good though, even though the pacing of the story is terrible and the ending will annoy you. Be sure to buy Deponia 2 as well if you're planning to buy Deponia 1.
