Good story, very good puzzles

I hated every single character in this game. The protagonist, the antagonists, the secondary main characters, the side characters ... Yet, I loved the game! The story is simple but good and uncovered in a good way. The protagonist was made an unlikeable, self-centered jerk on purpose, and that worked out ... well, mission accomplished. While growing extremely tired of him, it really felt like I only helped him reach his goal because [nah, no story spoilers]. The graphics are very nice and fits the setting and story, and the voice acting is good. The controls worked well though Rufus could have moved a little faster. The main reason for my five stars is the puzzles. They are a mix of out-there puzzles (I am a Monkey Island fan) and interesting logical puzzles. This might be subjective but the developers really found that sweet spot of challenging difficulty but no let-me-check-if-this-game-is-on-UHS moments. Solving them gave that feeling of accomplishment and reward that is just what I look for in an adventure game (though I at times was unsure if I really wanted Rufus to succeed). The game gives you a lot of hints but they are never too evident. It is always clear what you're short-term goals are. So, if you like a whacky, cartoonish story (albeit with very unlikeable characters) as indicated by the screenshots, this game might be for you. If you like really well designed out there puzzles and good logic puzzles, this game is for you. If you are more of the "use hammer on nail" style puzzler, you probably won't like it.

Prepare to laught, Rufus style !

I nearly started video games with monkey island, and it's impossible for me to talk about Deponia without quoting monkey island ! Rufus, the main character, is the same kind of loosy dreamer as Guybrush. Deponia is a modern monkey island with an original setting and excessive "what the fuck" humour. So fun that we want to try anything before doing the right thing, just to listen to Rufus sarcasms or egocentric remarks. By the way the English voices are perfect ! Beyond the fun there are many emotions, and moral questioning that make the game even more interesting ! Sorry for that but I used to thing (as a pretentious Frenchy) that Deutsch do not know how to tell a story, Daedalic made me so wrong one time with "the whispered world", and this is the second time with Deponia !

A true point and click adventure game

This game is exactly what I was looking for. A true point and click adventure set in a a fantasy world with quirky characters and a quest. While it wasn't overly challenging (there were about two really frustrating puzzles), it wasn't overly simple either. A lot of reviews didn't enjoy the game because of Rufus, but I actually liked playing as an "unlikable" character. Beautiful artwork and an enjoyable game - I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

A few annoying quirks...

The game is entertaining until it nears the end, and then you get several shortcuts built into the dialogue trees. Want to select a plan? Goal will fix that after the first option. Want to select an option before the final video plays? Don't worry, there is no amusing dialogue for any of them, just the exact same animation. This is made worst by the fact that the first part of the game feels more open. Sure, you're working towards goals, but there's enough amusing dialogue around to make it seem like you're making choices. The ending was perfectly placed for multiple possible outcomes, but because they wanted to make more games, you find yourself riding the rails and nothing you try to do makes any difference after the big reveal. You are currently also forced to skip one of the mini-games, even if you beat it, because it never actually registers the options you select (but somehow still plays a cut-scene if you have the right options)...

First impressions

After a long pause from point-and-clicks I found the Deponia series quite amusing and easy to approach. The grafics style is phenomenal in my opinion, if a tad blurri in some zoom levels at times. The voice acting is decent and the characters interesting. On the musical side I could ask no more of a game of this price point... it is marvellous and fits well into the game. Deponias narration is well written to provide player with enough clues to solve the puzzles. The game opens up slowly enough to introduce a beginner to the mentality of a point-and-click. The only complaint so far is that there is no run ability... so searching for objects in large spaces or between large rooms is a tad tedious in the long run, although moving to other rooms is assisted by a doubleclick mechanic that let's player skip most of the walking. All in all I have a feeling this series is going to be very fun and enjoyable experience.
