Ruined by Monetization Scheme

Unfortunately, the publisher/studio, Paradox, tends to ruin their titles with extremely predatory monetization schemes, for which this game, Crusader Kings II, is the poster boy. A barebones skeleton which they clearly hope you will spend hundreds of dollars on eventually buying most the DLC piece-by-piece, so as to get well over $70 out of you. Ethically, I must condemn the game and publisher totally, because that kind of practice ruins the in-game experience by effectively turning the entire game into one big advertisement. Perhaps someday they'll actually start pricing content at what it's worth and offering it in a non-predatory way. That is, of course, more likely if everyone holds them to account for their behavior. Perhaps someday I'll come back to see they've cut the Imperial Collection's price to something reasonable for what it is, and raise my rating, maybe even remove or rewrite this review. Perhaps... As it is, at over $100 even on a 60% discount, the Imperial Collection is still ridiculously overpriced for a 2012 game that looks like a 2012 game. It's like offering Pac Man for "free" but charging $6 for the ability to move left, another $15 for the ability to move up, etc... oh you want the powerups to appear, that's another $70.

Typical Paradox

Anytime you see Paradox attached to a grand strategy game you can expect it to be egregiously chopped up to push often pricey DLC no matter the game and this one is no exception. If you can enjoy the base game and not know all that you are missing, then awesome just remember what you learned here and approach any purchase from Paradox studio/interactive the more you enjoy the base game the more you'll start to notice the stuff they left out to get you to buy the DLCs.

Game is fun. The price is not.

Game can be fun even in vanilla. Though charging almost 300$ for full version of 11 y.o. game, still somehow full of bugs. That's so paradoxical.

No Mac or Linux support unlike Steam

Second class citizens right out of the gate. A refund from me should be in order if they don't change their anti-consumer decision. Crusader Kings II is out of place compared to other games developed and published by Paradox on GOG. Battletech, Europa Universalis IV, Imperator Rome, Knights of Pen and Paper, Prison Architect, Shadow Run, Stellaris and Surviving Mars all have native Linux versions on both GOG and Steam. Crusader Kings II stands out like a sore thumb. Here's to GOG and Paradox Interactive sticking with the standard they've already set and offering the Mac and Linux builds after release, like many GOG games have in the past. All I'm asking is that you follow the same policy of providing Mac and Linux support to those games that have it on Steam. Do the right thing!

Disappointing

In a depressing turn of what constitutes reality it seems that Paradox wants us to believe that "Standard Edition" should be the new name for what used to be called "Demo." Do not support studios trying to distort reality like this.
