Welcome to Chasm, an action-adventure game in which you play a new recruit undertaking your first mission for the Guildean Kingdom. Thrilled to prove your worth as a knight, you track strange rumors that a mine vital to the Kingdom has been shut down. But what you discover in the mining town is worse than you imagined: The townspeople have disappeared, kidnapped by supernatural creatures emerging from the depths.
Honor-bound to solve the mystery and restore peace to the Kingdom, you embark upon an epic adventure, with deadly battles against cunning monsters, exploration of ancient catacombs and castles, and powerful new equipment hidden at every turn. Though the overall story is the same for all players, your hero's journey will be unique: each of the rooms has been hand-designed, and behind the scenes Chasm stitches these rooms together into a one-of-a-kind world map that will be your own.

As the title says.
HOWEVER:
THE GOOD:
-Art assets and direction is coherent and solid
-Music is fitting and superbly done
-Game is responsive and allows for many styles of gameplay
THE BAD:
-Controls can be iffy/annoying at times, specially on keyboard
-Walljumping makes getting off a ledge grab a toss up between falling down where you want to go and jumping off in to the other direction
-The procedural generation makes following a guide/walkthrough nigh useless
THE ODD:
-THEM SILKY SMOOTH SPRITE ANIMATIONS
-The ending is VERY meh
This game is actually a lot of fun. The gameplay is just right and very well executed, the programmer really knows what he is doing.
If you played the PS1/GBA Castlevanias you'll feel right at home because the way your character moves and the combat feel exactly the same. Many people claim those Casltevanias are quite easy, but if you play Chasm on HARD, you' ll find it more challenging, though never unfair.
Another typical problem with metroidvanias is replayability: once you memorize the map, it's a bit less fun. Chasm offers a way around that by randomizing the map, but not in a procedurally generated generic world. In this case, every room seems manually crafted, and then it randomly rearranges some rooms each time you start a new game. There are also two more 'casual' random modes: arcade and race.
Combat is really good and every enemy provides a challenge. Each of them has a distinct pattern so you have to learn them and find out what is the best strategy to kill each one. Many enemies seem impossible until you figure out a way to beat them.
The only thing I'm not a fan is the asthetics of the game. It looks and sounds really cool, but it seems a bit generic. The main character is just a random soldier with a childish look and no sense of development during the game. The graphics are beautiful but many areas just seem quite generic, like your typical mines or crypts (keep and garden look quite good though). In a Castlevania game each room is different than the next, but in this game every room in the same area looks similar. Some enemies look really menacing but there are also many generic things like blobs, plants or insects. Music provides a great atmosphere and is kinda soothing, but there are no memorable tunes.
Chasm may not be too immersive but it's actually a great game and super fun if you don't need a lot of immersion to enjoy your games. If there's a sequel or spiritual successor with that in mind, it should be an absolute classic.
The procedural generation really doesn't do the game any favours, unless you really like seeing the exact copy of several rooms 3-5 times per area for some odd reason. Also it's only 5 massive areas, the last one is just a linear set of rooms leading up to the last boss ..and that's pretty much it for uniqueness. Everything else is solid, but bland.
There are some speedrunning options, but I don't see why you want to play it more than once. Maybe I got a particular boring layout in my playthrough, but with the repeating rooms and all I don't see any way this will be more fun the x-th time around.
Sliding along walls, running backwards (like SOTN), double jumping. These mechanics make the exploration really enjoyable and relaxing. About story, there are very interesting puzzles, that sometimes will fly over your head, but the hints are there. So the puzzles are quite challenging if you make long pauses during your game time.
The story itself is simple. I'd say the lore is shallow. The side quests are fun, even if it's just finding items for the villagers. I thought the bosses were a bit generic and not very challenging.
The pixel art is great. I love pixel art games.
In the end, it was a very fun experience. Even with the cons, I couldn't stop playing it, so it's a 4/5.
