I would recommend only getting these as a look back at history. I thought Wolfenstein 3D's level design was aged... I had NO idea. There is a lot of hidden wall searching in all of the games and a lot of the layouts are really basic. It's nice to see Carmack's origins though.
There is another game included in the Gamer's Edge sample by Romero that is not mentioned on the page. It's an even more rough platformer though.
I never played the 3d catacomb games but I did the 3d ones years ago. They are simple but still fun none-the-less. Is the level design pretty basic yes but it still isn't bad. These games would lay the ground work for castle wofenstein and then doom and beyond. If I had never played these before would I pick them up I don't know but its fun remembering though. This back when games still required a bit of imagination get immersed. Trust me back in the day CGA then VGA was so amazing and now seems archaic. Its a fun little series. It would be cool if someone remade the series but probably not. Its only 6 dollars folks.
This whole collection is to be honest more for the enthusiast who wants to see where one of the most influential development teams in gaming ever got their start. Most of the games simply won't hold up to much higher standards we have today, but they show those first steps to how we got there. That isn't to say you won't have fun playing them. In fact I absolutely enjoyed my time with just about every title in the collection. However if you have no interest in that historical value you probably won't get the most out of it. Even the retro gamers among us will can probably find better examples of what to play from the days of DOS if they don't have that interest.
The Catacomb Series is a fascinating one. Restricted, yet expansive. Narrowed-down, yet imaginative. A true testament of an age where much had to be done with little resources. Despite its whole 'it belongs in a museum' vibe, testing it is certainly quite an insightful view on how the FPS genre started and from where it evolved.
In many ways, I find Catacomb to be surprisingly more varied and atmospheric than Wolfenstein 3D, despite its limited maze-like level design and restricted arsenal. There's more enemy variety, each level makes a remarkable work to stand to their core themes, and overall it's really a game that manages an astounding lot with so little.
That said, there's little this game can offer to a modernized audience in terms of content or complex mechanics, yet I still definitely recommend to give it a try. If you do, though, do yourself a favor and play it through the CatacombGL source port, it'll make its dated controls feel way less of a hussle.
I personally had to get source port for all FPS titles in this pack - CatacombGL. 2D games I played DOS originals.
FPS games in this pack are fairly repetitive, but really not bad, though it I had enough after about an hour of gameplay per day. However these games are fairly short (about 90 minutes per title in average), so it won't take long.
2D games are pretty good for when they were made. Same as in FPS games, there are shootable walls that are mandatory to proceed in maps, so keep that in mind.
