Great pre-Wolf 3D shooter

The Catacombs Pack includes all the Catacombs 3D FPS games as well as the original 2D Catacombs game. I only played the FPS games. The games has the same controls scheme. It is a bit outdated but not too difficult to grasp. You have forward, backwards, turning sideways, shooting and a button that you hold in to strafe. The combat is fluid but there are never a lot of envies. The graphics are great for VGA graphics. The sound is well done for its time. Recommended for anyone interested in old-school FPS games or the history of video games.

another must have game on only on gog

Before we begin i have no nostalgic ties to this series. but I have always wanted to give it a go and thanks to gog i now can. The complete catacombs complete pack give you 4 fps games under the catacombs brand as well as a 2 top down versions and a dangerouse dave game. The basic game play is you walk around a dungeon picking up potions power up and tresure. To defeat your enemy you have quick fire balls you can mash out or hold down for a more deadly fire ball, these are not your only means of destroying your foes you have nukes and you can make them taste your lightning .You can also use your attack to break walls and find secrets. The usere interface is plain its not a bad thing but do you rember in DOOM and wolfenstein your face gets messed up well in catacombs you lose all your flesh and become a skeleton unless you heal your self that i think is a cool feature. thats prety much it apart from one track playing constanly that fits the game very well (only in catacombs 3d games) overall this game you get alot for the £4.75 price tag but i got it on sale for just over £1 but it is a must have for the vintage gamer intrested in the fps history and every adult man or woman who wants to relive the nostalgia of being there younger selfs again.

Genius of simplicity

You good wizard! Nemesis evil! Go kill! That's really as far as the plot goes, but the gameplay is so much fun it's hard to believe. It's that simplicity, a certain purity if you will, that makes this game such a great experience. It's just You and and a dungeon full of monsters with the Big Bad at the end. No distractions. Sure, it's crude by todays technical standards, but it's hard to argue with a simple, fun idea executed prerfectly. Anyone who enjoys dungeoncrawling and/or oldchool FPS games should love it.

The memories!

catabyss.exe My first experience in a 3D FPS. One of the most memorable games I've ever played next to the original EGA mechwarrior. A good story, nice big map, and plenty of bad guys to incinerate with your fireballs makes this a fantastic addition for modern day especially for a properly configured tablet. ID made some great titles, but this was my favorite. Waiting for an Android port so I can play on my phone.

5 Stars of nostalgia!

Catacombs pack offers the full 'Catacombs' experience... as the name might imply! Personally, of all of them, I played Catacombs abyss when I was little, so the 'nostalgia' value still applies for me, hence my 5-star review is mostly subjective. Meaning that the true grade for this game should be like 3 stars, maybe less if you are not a fan of retro games... but why would you buy it then?... well actually there is a reason. This game is, technically, the father of the grandfather of the FPS genre (basically it's a precursor of Wolfenstein 3D... actually, Catacombs, Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem(um) all share the same path, being all sequels of other kind of game, like platformers or archaic top-down shooter). Anyway, it's still good to play it in order to see for 'historical reason', but that doesn't stop the game to be actual fun! In the simplest way possible. Basically, you go around shooting stuff, but! meanwhile the very first instalment is a top down shooter and the second is the actually precursor of Wolfenstein ( it's clear if you compare design), the last expansion packs offer a different approach, which doesn't mean changing to much the gameplay, but in presentation, such as a more 'spooky' atmosphere (at least, it was spooky to me when I was 8ish) with no sounds and more 'complex' maps (let's call them that) with secret door needed to advance the level and not as an extra. So, worth it? Yes. They are fun, they are simple, and you won't getting bored (at least, if you play them with long breaks). Remember, it's all about showing who's a warrior and who's a novice (.... nope, terrible pun)
