Engaging Action/Adventure

Anybody who is a fan of classics such as the Zelda series, RARE's platformers, and other action adventure games should definitely pick this title up! It is very engaging, with puzzles that are difficult yet manageable. There are many side-quests for pearls, similar to RARE's Banana's in DK64 or Mario 64's "stars"; they allow you to progress at certain points. Yet in reality, this game is a spiritual successor to the N64 Zelda games, but it doesn't provide an enormous inventory or all-out attempts at being epic. Regardless, it is very pleasant; they put the save points (or in game lingo, "mdisc readers") in the perfect spots. Similarly to Nintendo's classic title, it is based around puzzles and struggles in large dungeon settings with a minor yet ominous plot. That said, the post-modern, alien environment is enticing, the side quests and other fillers allow you to regain your focus, and the sheer unique artwork and mechanics are amazing. Note: Console gamers, be prepared to use your mouse and keyboard. USB Gamepads are NOT supported in this title!

Good, Bad and Ugly

I want to say from start that this game is a true classic like Planescape: Torment of RPGs, Monkey Island of adventure games,etc... So what makes this game that great. Two words: World design. Hillys is a masterpiece in all game worlds. It is a water world which citys are built on small islands. All of the citizens are humanoid animals, but they can talk like you and me. The planet is under attack of an alien race named Domz, but government isn't able to protect his citizens from the invaders. We, I mean Jade is living with his pig uncle, Peyj and some orphans at a lighthouse. One morning when Jade is making her daily meditation, Domz attacks the lighthouse and we enter the story here. There are lots of things to do at Hillys. You can race at boat races, take photos of various animals, gamble, play air hockey at bar, etc... In the story's side you get in a lot of actions too. Direct combat with your staff, stealth, combat with your boat, puzzles to solve. You never feel like you do the same things and all of things to do are lots of fun, they weren't put there for simply filling inside the game. There are lots of characters to meet, lots of plot twist in the story and lots of great moments. Soundtrack is marvelous, graphics are still high quality(thanks to their cartoon style), dialouges are great and hilarious and game feels like it is a high quality one, not a simple profit machine like today's Call of Dutys, MMORPGs, etc... This is a true masterpiece which is shaped by Micheal Ancel and its 2nd one is coming soon too. So when you still have time to play, grab it and jump in the world of Hillys. You will be quiet happy with your decision to buy it, promise.

an awesome game!

This game was awesome! Great story and gameplay, the music was genius, i listen it today too and then i can recognize the the feeling of game. I can't understand why were the sold statistics so bad. It's true, this game is different, not a typical adventure or action style, it's a very good mix! The world Hyllys is very detailed built, i love it!

A gem

From the dark undertone, to the gorgeous art, to the smooth flow of combat, to the tense stealth sections, this game has so much to offer. One of the most notable things is the incredible characterisation, most notably in Jade, the protagonist. She is one of the most memorable female protagonist in gaming, if not the most memorable. She´s surrounded by equally interesting characters like Uncle Pey´j and Double H, who (beside the riming names) are not only funny but also respectable and well crafted, both in their own way. If there has to be a single complaint about it it would have to be the inconsistency of the voiceacting, it isn´t bad, but it has it´s lacking moments. It isn´t anything really immersionbreaking nor anything that actually affects the feel as a whole, though it is something you will notice. As for the soundtrack, it is some of the greatest I have ever heard, it feels calm when it should, exciting when it should, and tence when it should, and it really delivers! I cannot express enough how well placed and well made the music is. It´s topnotch! I cant recommend this game enough, it is so incredibly well done and so memorable that I still find myself humming the songs or quoting the characters. Big thumbs up!

Decent story, nice graphics, GREAT soundtrack and gameplay that never gets boring. Buy it!

After hearing this game being praised highly for years, I decided to finally pick it up. It certainly didn’t disappoint. A lot of people who didn’t like this game seemed to have issues with the fact that the game seems to be tailored towards a younger audience. This is true to some extent, although it didn’t really bother me.The story and characters in the game reminded me of a pixar movie: it’s somewhat kiddy, but the game is nevertheless enjoyable for all ages. You play as Jade, a reporter trying to expose the truth about a corrupt government. The story isn’t particulary impressive, but compelling nonetheless. You’ll really start to care for the characters and you’ll want to know how the story ends. The graphics still hold up very well. The game has an original, 'cartoony' style, and it still looks very good today.I did, however, encounter some graphical glitches. Nothing gamebreaking, but annoying anyway. Some helpful support on the forums helped me reduce the glitchiness by a lot, but it never completely disappeared. Where the graphics and the story are decent, the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. It includes some basic video game theme, such as orchestral pieces to enhance the epic moments, and a solo piano piece that plays during the tear-jerking parts. The composer of the game’s soundtrack pulls these off very well, but also adds some unbelievably catchy songs that seems to be sung in either spanish or complete gibberish. I could barely make out any words, but the songs are real earworms, and I found myself yelling along pretty quickly. This great soundtrack also comes with the game, which is very nice. Lastly, there’s the gameplay, and BGE really shines in that department. You’ll perform different tasks in this game, and the vast majority of them are very fun to play. What’s most impressive however, is the sheer variety of the tasks you’ll perform. One moment you’ll be sneaking around a secret base trying to free a fellow reporter, another time you’ll fly above the sea in your hovercraft trying to take a picture of a whale, and at one point in the game you’ll find yourself playing some kind of SF version of air hockey against a talking shark (I shit you not). This way, you are unlikely to ever get bored. You’re in a rollercoaster, never doing something so long it gets boring, and always moving on to the next task. This makes BGE a very fun game to play. In short, Beyond Good and Evil is a game you should most likely get. If you want a deep, mature story, you might have to look elsewhere, but if you want to have some light-hearted fun in a beautiful fantasy world, this is a must-buy!
