Beyond Good & Evil

Famous for underperforming on release, Beyond Good & Evil is one of Ubisoft's great cult classics. Set on the idyllic world of Hillys, we play as Jade, a photographer who finds herself wrapped up in a shadowy conspiracy as a cell of rebel journalists hires to sneak into the bases of the local military authority, the Alpha Sections, and uncover whatever links them to an invading alien race known as the DomZ. Part stealth, part action, part photography-simulator and part hovercraft driving, the game juggles a lot of hats at once, making it an ambitious title for the early 2000s, and this does mean it doesn't do anything brilliantly, but the powerful atmosphere and shining creativity on display carries Beyond Good & Evil in a beautiful way.

Epic title, sloppy port.

I have to say that Beyond Good & Evil is one of my favorite games of all time. It's got a strange yet beautiful world, a stunning, strong-willed protagonist and fantastic gameplay that blends stealth, combat and photography (!). As green-lipstick-wearing Jade you get to investigate a strange conspiracy on the planet Hillys. People are being abudcted by an alien force known as the DomZ. The Alpha Sections claim to have come to protect Hillys but there's something strange about them - there's clearly more going on than meets the eye. So Jade joins up with a group called IRIS to investigate the mystery and uncover the truth behind the kidnappings. As I said earlier, BG&E blends together a nice variety of gameplay styles and it actually manages to do everything quite well. What's upsetting about this is that the port to PC is a complete mess. If you can find this for a console you own, get it there. The PC version has numerous issues that may or may not crop up for you including poor sound quality, no controller suppourt and not even launching at all. If you want to brave these issues and try to make it work then you may be up for a fight. If you DO get it to work, however, this is a game you'll never forget. Overall, Beyond Good & Evil is a five-out-of-five game.. but due to the horrendous port of this title I have to give the PC version a two. Beware.

Too bad it doesn't have a sequel.

The only two bad things I can say about this game is that the story doesn't end and they never made a sequel, and that its a port so its not made with a mouse in mind. But do yourself a favor and buy this game, its amazing in every way, damn near perfect. Good controls, fun and varied gameplay, good sound effects, good music, great setting and atmosphere, simple but good story and characters. There is lots to do, take pictures of hidden animals to make cash, join races for fun and profit, boss battles, bit of puzzle solving, running from danger sections, lots of exploring and dungeoning. This game is so much fun.

One of the best

Atmosphere, Story, Characters, Dialogues, Gameplay is just AWESOME! There is so much love and motivation that have been put into the game- you recognize it at every corner of the game! The mixture of stealth and hack&slay is well balanced (there are passages where you aren't able to choose though). Upgrades, Hovercraft, talking animals and some good old invasion fleet enslaving people and destroying anything else. I simply LOVE this game. Thank you very much, GOG!!!

Great game

Amazing fantasy arcade game, although I remember that it was mostly underrated when it first came out and I still can't get why. I highly recommend it.
