Amazing Game for a certain type of gamer

This is one of my favorite games of all time, but I do not think it is for everyone. I love it because it is immersive. The mechanics force players to observe the world and not to rush through it, as a result, mission mechanics repeat themselves, but this clears away any learning curve that might take you out of the experience. Also, this is why many feel the the gameplay is slow or even boring. If you like fast and relflex intensive games, I do not think you will like this one. If you like getting lost in an immersive an highly detailed world (LA Noire fan?), you will have a wonderful time.

A Highly Underrated Game

The critical reviews I've seen on here and elsewhere make me very sad, because this game doesn't deserve it at all. Ubisoft's focus on creating the atmosphere, not the game itself, sets Assassin's Creed apart from other games, as developing the reality of the experience and atmosphere took priority over the gamers' enjoyment. Strangely enough, because they forgot to think much about whether the game is enjoyable, they made it extremely fun. This, of all games, is among the easiest to completely forget reality, or even the fact that you're playing a game, as the atmosphere is so engrossing and beautiful. Yes, there is repetition, but it was executed perfectly as to promote the reality of an assassin's life, without losing the player's interest. Imagine yourself being in the holy lands during the third crusade as a tourist, spy, warrior, assassin, rock climber, and parkourist all at once, while enjoying a highly riveting plot and an astoundingly beautiful atmosphere, coupled with perfectly executed music. That, is the essence of Assassin's creed.

Very good first effort

I played this game on Xbox 360 and loved the concept of the game and to be honest I don't recognise any differences between the base game on console and this supposed "Director's Cut". So don't go in expecting an extended experience as I did. The story is quite fascinating and that's what kept me playing, although the missions lack some variation. This is a common critique, but given that this was the first entry of a new IP, I understand they had a more limited budget (~$20million). However, excessive grind is a common feature even in recent AC entries, so to give AC1 a bad repuation for it seems unfair to me. For me, the limited sandbox is a bigger issue; there's not much freedom to execute your assassinations. Additionally, a certain class of NPC has a very limited dialogue library, so be prepared for some greatest hits to be featured multiple times. I also find the controls quite clunky, although that may be due to my own skills, or lack therof. Regardless, I find movement much smoother in more recent entries. If you have never played AC1, I won't spoil the story for you, but you get a game which I played through in 12 hours. The play time can be extended if you don't ignore the plethora of collectibles. I recommend you leave these alone at first and purely focus on the story. You don't really get anything extra for finding them all, except for a sense of pride and accoplishment. Oh wait, wrong company. But seriously, don't bother with all the flags and stuff that are "hidden" in the game, because you'll lose interest very soon. I adopted both playstyles, so take my word for it. Anyhow, the game's very affordable during the many sales and if you buy on GOG you don't have to worry about DRM. Now, the description on GOG Galaxy mentions that the game is non-linear, which is quite a stretch. Occasionally you can choose which mission you'll do first, but in the end the order doesn't really matter. I suppose this comes back to my point about the limited sandbox.

Amazing engine and scenery

Let me start by saying that Assassin's Creed II is one of the best games I have ever played. It has absolutely amazing graphics, a beautiful world, lots to do, a FANTASTIC story, wonderful and deep characters, and the game was entertaining from start to finish. Now, how I feel about the original Assassin's Creed... This game has a fantastic engine, and the gameplay is extremely fun. Running around from rooftop to rooftop, assassinating random guards is fantastically fun. Unfortunately, when it comes down to doing missions, the game becomes extremely repetitive and boring. You might spend 30 minutes running around the city, performing different tasks to gain information on your target. You get everything set up, and all you need to do is sneak into the crowd, blend in, and make the kill. But then, a crazy old old beggar man in the crowd gets angry, and pushes you for no reason at all. No big deal, right? Only now, all the guards have drawn their weapons and are coming towards you. So what do you do? You kill them all, one by one, and then assassinate the target. And it wasn't even hard. This is how every single assassination goes. It becomes so impossible to stealth kill that it ends up being a massive battle against tons of guards, and you kill them all one by one with a few well timed strikes. There is a problem with a game when it is more fun to make up your own story line and run around and kill people than it is to do the assassinations you're supposed to. On top of that, it takes forever to quit, as you have to quit from the Middle Ages into modern times, then walk around and quit modern times, then quit the game file, and menu, and other menu... something like that. All in all, its a wonderful world to explore, but it seems like they put all the time into the engine and the mechanics. Considering they really hit the nail on the head with Assassin's Creed II, there really is no point playing this one.

It's just okay.

The first Assassin's Creed game hasn't aged quite as well as the Ezio trilogy but despite it's flaws I think there's enough here to enjoy IF you're a fan of the series. To sum up the positives the main story is solid and the nine assassination missions alone are worth experiencing if you're invested in the series. With that said there's quite a few reasons to be careful when deciding whether or not to pick this game up. For one a controller is basically required to fully enjoy this game, kb&m controls jsut don't feel unatural. Keep in mind that if you're using an Xbox 360/One controller the game doesn't register the triggers as buttons so controls that would be mapped there are now mapped to the bumpers and it can feel awkward. Another thing to keep in mind is that the core gameplay loop is very repetitive. Before you can start each assassination there's a variety of side missions you have to do around town to obtain information about your target and you're required to do at least three before you can proceed. The PC version adds a few new mission types into the mix but it still gets old after the third or fouth assassination. Lastly, while the story picks up towards the end of the game the gameplay takes a step back. Without spoiling anything I'll say that for the majority of the game you're encouraged to take a stealthy aproach and avoid combat when possible. This approach is the way that Assassin's Creed is meant to be playing and it can be really rewarding to complete missions and assassinations without ever being spotted. However the last hour or so of the game throws this away and sends you into a gauntlet of combat and it can be really difficult if you've never practiced it before hand. Overall I'd say definitely check this game out if you're a fan of the series and are willing to put up with it's cons but if you're brand new I'd say be cautious, you might be better off just watching a story summary and starting with Assassin's Creed 2.
