Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore is an uniqe experience. Usually when a game is a spiritual successor it is inspired by timeless classic. In this case Seedy Eye Software decided to pick Link: The Faces of Evil for the CD-i as their source of inspiration. Thankfully it is much more polished and fun than this infamous The Legend of Zelda title.
Due to the mass popularization of games like soulslikes and roguelikes, it might be easy to dismiss Arzette as a rather easy game. Sure, on casual it might be. However, on the normal difficulty the game is indeed a bit more taxing. Sure, you don't have lives or continues, but the enemies will still find a way to become a thorn in your side. Almost every one of them has some sort of projectile homing attack as well, especially when they get the shields a bit later in the game and you'll need to use a special weapon to even be able to damage them. So it isn't exactly a cakewalk, even though it might not be quite as difficult as some of the souls type games of today. There's also quite a bit of platforming, though so far nothing too crazy in those regards.
Despite it's CDI influenced silliness, which is right on the mark if you'd ask me - this is a game that greatly encourages exploration. You'll be looking at every nook and cranny, while making sure you have enough bombs, lantern fuel and rope, because these areas are much larger than you think they are and several are walled off with by magic tapestries, which can only be destroyed by the sacred candles that you'll see littered throughout the map. There are also hidden coins and other such secrets, so there's quite a lot to see here. The fact that there was just so much hidden in each area is what kept me playing, eager to explore newly opened areas as well as going back to make sure I didn't forget anything in previously explored ones. Even though I thought I'd at least explored half of the game, within just two hours I found that I had only explored a mere twenty percent of it! So there's quite a lot here to find for players willing to do that level of exploration.
They actually build a decent metroidvania around those cutscenes.
With everything form the art to controls to structure evoking those old games, it's a bit of a bummer the two difficulties available from the start are so laughable easy. This isn't an exaggeration, you literally have unlimited lives and continues, and if you die you get set back like half a screen and healed to full. On "casual" the enemies even drop health, so if you generally heal back the damage you took right after. It really feels like "heroic" and onward were the intended way to play.
Nonetheless, if you try to get a 100% on your first run without looking things up you get a good 5-6 hours out of it, later you are looking at about 1-1,5h per run.
The only real big criticism would be that it's often impossible to distinguish between foreground and background, but even that is true to the source material
A great, little metroidvania. Not very long but lets be real here, the major selling point here are the cut scenes. If you know what this game is referencing, you're going to have a good time.
This is essentially a spiritual successor to the infamous CDi Legend of Zelda games, Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil, even incorporating some of the people involved with those. The difference here, is that the gameplay actually works, so you given a glimpse of what could have been had those games been made competently. Judged on it's merits, Arzette is a really fun Metroid-lite!
