ARMA: Cold War Assault

I'm not someone too interested in combat simulation titles, i own ArmA 2 on Steam and do like the game, but it's not my go to genre. But, yesterday, while searching for cheap titles to buy for my tiny budget, i saw this game and went for it, it was 1,74 BRL, which in a direct conversion is like, 50 cents tops. Been loving the game so far, gameplay is in depth and enjoyable and you can sink a lot of time into it if you're so inclined.

Back in 2001 when ArmA: Cold War Assault or Operation Flashpoint as it was known, was released, it was considered one of the most realistic depictions of being a foot soldier in a war. With its main storyline being set during the Cold War, when tensions were high between the USA and the Soviet Union, following a group of soldiers that find themselves stuck in the middle of an invasion on the island of Nogovo by the Soviet Union. You play as one of the soldiers and your main objective is to push the Soviet Union army off of the island while keeping the civilians safe. And there is also an expansion pack that follows a civilian who becomes part of a resistance group that struggle against the well trained and armed Soviet Union. If you're thinking you can go and play this game like Call of Duty or any other game, then you're mistaken. You can't just rush into enemy fire and expect your health to regenerate, your only way of recovering health is by calling for the medic that is with you, provided he haven't been killed during combat. Also if you get hit in the arms or legs, you suffer penalties like reduced movement speed and having a hard time aiming any of the weapons.

1. The Red Hammer expansion is not included in this release. I mean, if you're gonna re-release this game, why not have everything released for it? I'm aware that the Red Hammer expansion was developed by Codemasters, the publishers of the game back in 2001 and not Bohemia who developed the main game and the other expansion, but come on, you have the budget to develop all-new video games but don't have the money to license it? 2. Not optimized for modern hardware. When you set the graphics settings to maximum, the game becomes completely unplayable, I got less than 1 FPS when I did that, had to use the Task Manager to force shut it down and to uninstall and reinstall the game to reset the graphics settings to this release's defaults. The game was originally released in 2001 as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, re-released in 2011 as Arma: Cold War Assault and now it's 2022 and this issue never was fixed, even one of the developers admitted that you shouldn't maximize everything because they were programmed to take advantage of old hardware. While it's nice from him to admit that, but still, why the laziness to optimize it? I like too much of this game…and I want to send my congratulations for the GOG team because you are give one great job for every people (who like to play…of course), also for who live out of USA (I´m Brazilian). I don´t know how are (hard or easy) to buy games more old in other countries, but here is hard…or better: here was hard. Greetings for everybody

used to play this on a shoddy laptop back in the day. brings back alot of memories. graphics arent the best but it makes up for it in the gameplay aspect. i dont know if there were any milsim shooters like this released around this time. great stuff.
