This truly feels like a long-lost adventure game from decades ago. Some puzzles have a bit of moon logic, but nothing that's not par for the course. The music is wonderful. The art is gorgeous. The animations are excellent and full of soul. The story is fun. What a labor of love this clearly was for the developer team. Can't wait to see what they get up to next.
This is a delightfully sweet game. Characters are cute without being too cheesy. It's a happy little game that does lots of things right and more importantly doesn't have any deal braking downsides.
Puzzles were on the light side for me but I enjoyed them nevertheless and a few of them still had me gnawing at them fr a while.
And if you're looking for a challenge you can try to solve the optional puzzles necessary to find all the optional "pebbles" (in-game collectibles).
Music is nice and gentle for the most part and complements the game well. I'm not much use at reviewing music, but suffice it to say it's not negatively impacting the game whatsoever.
Story is decent. No crazy stuff, not overly brilliant either but solid and not getting in the way of things. Also delightfully free of any socio-political undertones. This is already more than most games these days manage to come up with.
If you were having a look at the screenshots it's probably obvious, but this is also free of any disturbing, intense or overly dramatic material. Super safe - not just for kids but also for old-timers, like me, who just don't need to see that much blood and drama any more (honestly, real life has ample of that, why would people want this in their games?).
This game impressed me, in multiple ways.
The world of Polisemia imagines a late-cretaceous world with pre-industrial civilizations. Good starting point, but nothing without a skilled writer. Yet, we get multiple factions with thought-out history, relations, customs and species. The world feels plausible and alive. I enjoyed that. But most impressive of all -> Basic needs like food, water, light, shelter, security, sleep or waste disposal are constantly addressed. It gives everything beyond that more weight. Never have I seen a game more focused on those needs.
Characters are also solid:
- everyone has something to do, personal struggles or own agenda
- few are exclusively plot or exposition devices, and if so they at least get some backstory
- most are seen doing work or chores, just like real life
- they don't all share the same level of knowledge or attention for their enviroment
- no characters are intentionally written as bland, stupid or obnoxious
So, the writer respects its creations, and the player. I can enjoy every character, I didn't end up disliking a single character. That's remarkable.
There's tons of optional dialogue, comments, snarky remarks and text hidden away for the player to find. Use the Talk-option on anything, even inanimate objects. Use the Take-Option on anything, even NPCs. Almost any interaction yields unique and often humourous results. Trying every possibility is rewarded.
The developers put quite some effort into introducing the player to new game mechanic without explicitly mentioning them. You probably won't notice it on your first playthrough, but it becomes more obvious on repeat playthroughs. You're cued in on upcoming puzzles, often in really clever ways. I never got stuck, yet I had to think for myself. This invisible guidance was pulled off expertly.
The ending will offer a lot of resolution and tie up the story's loose ends. It is as memorable as the game. My best purchase of 2023. Thank you Crash! Thank you Twarda!
Great visuals and audio, nice dino designs (the game looks like a good cartoon), likable characters. Good story (for a game intended for younger players). Puzzles are fairly easy but not too easy and mainly item based with a couple of logical puzzles. If you want to look for shiny pebbles (unlocking bonus artworks and 3 mini-games), you'll get another hour of two game time. There's even a simple encyclopedia providing some basic knowledge in addition to entertainment. There's a soul in this game from very small team, made with heart and passion.
I've played about 1/3 of it and I still felt safe to leave a review simply from how well made this is. I simply do not doubt that the rest of the game will be any less made with care. The main character is cozy and rellateable enough, the dialogues make sense, and there is a sence of detail I absolutley adore! Puzzles been good so far, music is a great match. Only thing is that sometimes I find the gameplay a little bit slow. I'd love for an alternative to fast travel through places with double click when revisiting locations and 1-2 times I felt that there was a gap in story or slow pace that just made me feel a little unmotivated or lost. But appart from that I think this is a little jewel of a point and click game. Also, points for giving identity to the small things. I like how this game feels like sort of a combo between classical point and click adventure games like Monkey Island or Kings quest, and the sort of childrens adventure games I played as a kid.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
