Majora's Mask to Ys 8's Ocarina of Time
Zelda analogy: Ys 9 is to Ys 8 as Majora's Mask is to Ocarina of Time. Same basic engine, generally the same overall gameplay, but weirder story, darker themes, and unconventional framing. This can feel unsettling when you start 9, until you find your footing begin to understand what's going on, what the game is up to, and how it intends to advance you through the story. Even then, once I think I've got it, the game has some unusual plotting and narrative devices that leave me scratching my head, pondering what it all means, and where is it all going. I do not mean this in a bad way. I am a person who loves to try and figure out what's going on in a complex story told in an unorthodox manner, and Ys 9 defintely hit that spot for me. The core thematic axiom of Monstrum Nox is identity: what defines it, who decides whom a person really is. Are we the person we think we are, or are we the person others think us to be? The answer is fluid, shifting from moment to moment, and sometimes blurring out from a single point to a continuum. This is the subtext that underlies almost every major event and plotline in Ys 9. On a less philosophical level, Ys 9 is a kind of costumed superhero game. The characters under the player's control have secret identities and special powers. This sets them apart and often literally above the normal inhabitants of the city (verticality plays a major role in the design of the levels and experiences). Citizens have varying opinions on the Monstrums' presence and activities. As often in superhero tales, some in positions of power and privledge see the Monstrums as a threat to the status quo while the downtrodden and less fortunate can be more sympathetic and supportive. Throughout, people of varying social strata seek to exploit the Monstrums' existence for their own gain. In all, I am quite pleased with Ys IX. It took me longer than I expected to really get into it, but once I crossed that threshold I could hardly put it down. Rating: FUN
