Opis
We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially-enthused society.

Retrofuturistic 1960s England

Set in retrofuturistic 1960s England, you will find a city ravaged by war and rebuilt by delusionally happy people. Everything appears to be happy in Wellington Wells, including the roads, the people, and its omnipresent television personality, Uncle Jack! However, it’s a big, idyllic world on the brink of collapse. You will discover the history of this world, and how it came to be just so beguilingly happy.

Three Interwoven Narratives

Play as three flawed characters who explore their own connections to the events surrounding the rebuilding of Wellington Wells. They each have a unique storyline in which they interpret and react to the events around them in different ways. As you hide, conform, or fight back as each of them, you will encounter dark humour, a spot of hope, and even some redemption along the way.

Procedurally Generated World

In We Happy Few no two playthroughs are alike. While the citizens of Wellington Wells will always want to ensure that you’ve taken your Joy, the procedurally generated world will ensure that your experience with We Happy Few is different and unique.

Customizable Gameplay

Aside from a procedurally generated world, there are many ways to customize your We Happy Few experience:
  • Choose from a range of difficulties for new and experienced players alike,
  • Play through the story, or customize the sandbox world to your liking,
  • Try permadeath, if you want to satisfy all your masochistic needs,
  • Collect recipes, scavenge items, and craft dozens of weapons, tools, and devices,
  • Creep, crush, or conform your way through puzzles and encounters, and
  • Fight with your bare hands or the crazy weapons you create.

What is wrong?

While this game definitely does have an interesting visual atmosphere the gameplay is nothing that impressive and in fact, has severe flaws: 1. Side quests are awful. When there is a point doing them in the first campaign, in the second balance is so off that you just get bombarded with skill points and will get every OP perk in first quarter/third of the playthrough. But that's not the main problem, quests are boring and sometimes lazy to a point "come back at night tomorrow" 5 times and that's it. I am not even joking. If I'm not mistaken that quest is called Awkward Courtesy. 2. There's absolutely no point in differing takedowns to non-lethal/kills. Why? Because NPCs don't wake up in this game no matter what. If you knocked them out (made them unconscious), they will lie there for a couple of hours and then just die. So much for a pacifist run just to know 4 hours in that NPCs still die. Why bother and use non-lethal weapons? Exactly, no point. Pick whatever the weapon's best. 3. Perks are unbalanced and some design decisions are questionable: e.g. You can't run in the main districts unless you have a perk (well, you can, but everybody would get angry at you and they will start chasing you). Why would you want to limit player movement so much? And these districts aren't small. And I dropped the game on the third campaign just because of character traits. He has an innate passive that reduces his movement speed by 20% and he doesn't have the Stealth branch, so he will always have to slowly jog around these districts. Good job, that's one of the worst design decisions I've seen yet. 4. Combat and stealth are not challenging at all: I played on a custom difficulty (combat+enemy alertness on the hardest and needs on the easiest). Combat was easy because you can never die, you always have a bunch of medkits which are easy to use mid-combat. Stealth is the most broken in terms of saving time. Don't want to have a lame fight with a pack of NPCs? Just use distraction and choke them out even when they're like 4-5 ft away from each other. And yeah, they won't wake up others, but rather just stare at their dead bodies and just wait for you to takedown them. 5. Size of the map: All campaigns take place in one city and happen almost at the same time, within the same districts. But every time you finish the campaign the city is generated again. Why? Not to mention that cutscenes have some differences in interactions between the characters but they have no impact on the ending. Why not just make a fixed city instead. It would've probably been better even if it was 3-4 times smaller, the world is too huge anyway. Streets are basically empty (except for pointless NPCs) First 5 hours of gameplay were good but shortly after, I started understanding what matters in this game and what doesn't. It completely ruined my gameplay experience. I played through the second campaign only for the story.

Disapointment.

The game is just open world for the sake of being open world. There was no fun to be had dealing with this simi-survival system they put in place or the constant non-stop need to do combat at ever turn. There is such a good story here, so much that could have been done. If they had just made this a liniar game and focoused on the storytelling this game would have been amazing. Not to mention the fact that if the game had launched without being so buggy it would have given it a little more credibility. Clearly they just gave up when they had something barely functioning as a game and went with it. Not planning to buy games from these guys anymore, they have just straight up ruined any association with quality they ever had.

I never backed this on Kickstarer, but..

God damn. The game went through so many iterations, with an almost change in entire concept more than once. So, this was originally teased as a dystopian, BioShock-esque, drug-addled nightmare set in Britain. Steampunk to a degree, to boot. What we actually got in the early access period was a Survival-Game with procedually generated aspects. People were no doubt unhappy with this change from concept to execution. So, they went back to the drawing board...Admirable. To try and get back to the roots of the original concept, they did sort of change it back as they got closer to the next versions of the game. However then they partnered with a publisher, the cost of the game changed, the scope of the project changed. And frankly, it went from an indie game, from a development studio which really doesn't have the experience of a triple A title developer, to the cost and expectation of a Triple A game. What we got was true to the concept. But the execution is still flawed. Filled with bugs. Permformance issues are rampant even on my build (Not the best, but I think a Ryzen 1700 at 4Ghz, a GTX 1080 and 16GB of RAM, with the game installed on an SSD, should be enough to maintain 60FPS at 1080p on a game like this, with the quality of assets it uses, with the complexity of gameplay it has in terms of mechanics and A.I. function.....The game just shouldn't perform this badly, even after all the patches) and frankly the specification expectations are just wrong, in every sense of the word, given how badly the game performs. This game promised atmosphere, mystery and suburban horrors. Frankly, the art is given no justice in comparison to the actual product. I cannot recommend this less, because the minimum is 1 stars. I'd give it 0 if possible. It is the worst kickstarter baby I've ever played.

Glad I got it when it was in Alpha

So far the story is kinda interesting but the whole joy mechanic really irks me. I mean when you start "coming down" from the drug, all of the NPCs immediately know and become hostile, attacking you on sight. The whole town seems to come down on you and its just not fun when this happens. Its a bit disappointing but I am glad I bought it back before they jacked the price up to $60 for no discernable reason.

First impressions - not quite worth $50

First impressions - 2 hours in. I keep waiting for a game to mess me up the way Bioshock did. I long for a Prey like ending. All the ingredients do appear to be in place too. Would you kindly tell developers that? That said, even on hard, the game appears to be ridiculously easy. Based on interwebz information it seems to have been a conscious design choice. There should be an actual hard mode for people and a story mode for those, who just want the story. I am not sure why the two cannot co-exist. Anyway, the game is not bad thus far, but not worth its full price. If the ending messes me up, I will come back here to give it 5 stars.
