Be sure to check Season Pass and Season Pass 2!

Explore the Koronus Expanse.
Begin your adventure aboard your personal, giant voidship, traveling between the multitude of systems within the Koronus Expanse, a barely charted and incredibly perilous region of space. Despite being considered a backwater of the Imperium, this region encompasses an enormous stretch of the void, filled with dangerous creatures and prodigious opportunities for profit and exploration.

Your decisions matter, Lord-Captain.
During quests show your subjects mercy or disdain, stay faithful to the God-Emperor, or consort with enemies of Mankind - your every decision and every act, even in character creation, is changing the in-game open world and those who inhabit it.

Gather your crew.
Rogue Traders never travel alone. Gather your retinue of righteous heroes, twisted psykers, and perfidious xenos. All of them are ready to follow you into the darkness between the stars. They will offer you counsel, aid you in battle, and allow you to amass ever more power. In return, you can guide them through their own personal journeys, changing their destinies forever.

Plan your actions carefully.
Slaughter the enemies of Mankind in a fully-fledged isometric turn-based tactical combat. Take advantage of cover, the environment, and careful positioning to overpower your enemies. When that is not enough - use your companion`s powerful abilities to turn the tide of battle and achieve victory even in the direst of situations. Our video game adaption of the classic Rogue Trader ruleset allows an enormous number of possibilities for you to explore.

If you’re a 40K fan or just looking for a combat-heavy RPG outside of the normal fantasy fare, Rogue Trader will make a welcome addition to your library. It dives deeper into the setting and lore than any other video game to date, showing that it’s clearly a game by fans, for fans. Owlcat gave us multiple Pathfinder RPGs - hopefully, we’ll see more adventures in the Koronus Expanse in the future as well.

8.2/10

In the end, the moments of jank and the less-than-gripping combat didn’t diminish my experience or my desire to play. I still enjoyed leveling my character. I still enjoyed building my party, especially where skills were concerned. I was also impressed by the intuitive nature of skill checks. When making a check, the game will automatically select the character with the highest rank in that skill to carry out the check. It’s a small touch, but a nice one. Ultimately, this is an easy game to recommend if you like RPGs that put their narrative forward and build their characters in meaningful ways. It may not find a home in everyone’s collections, but it will be a shining star for fans of the setting who appreciate a narrative focus.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an ultra crunchy, 130-hour space epic with excellent writing and combat, but unfortunately, also a lot of bugs.

Disappointing.. again

Starts of very strong - Acts 1 and 2 are excellent. I didn't have any serious bugs, the game is fun and the characters are memorable. Act 3 is where it starts to go downhill. Villains are unimpressive and easily forgotten, at one point they remove all the items from your inventory and you have to reequip ALL OVER AGAIN (inventory system is terrible), and you can literally die both from picking the wrong options in a dialogue (horrible game design) AND by failing skill checks in a mandatory storybook (even worse game design; however though of this should be fired imo). There is nothing you can do about this except reload, so hope you made a timely save! Just awful.

Really good *AND* really bad...

100% agree with tyrion85's review: Acts 1 & 2 are excellent, then Act 3 just knocks you out, steals all your gear (literally, everything gone), and kicks you into the gutter. And if all that wasn't bad enough you're forced to endure what feels like near constant scripted sequences that just take over and force you to watch some useless little scene every time you take a few steps. I honestly don't even feel like I'm playing my character anymore...

A good game that needed more time

It's a good game but it's not polished. The first two chapters were fine, a few frustrating mechanics that needed more tuning & testing, some bugs but overall a good experience. After chapter two the game really fell down hard. Bugs became more frequent. Mechanics like space combat & colonies felt more tedious than enjoyable. Both could one day be really good if they release an update or a dlc that focuses on these mechanics. The story is really good but after act two, characters could in one dialogue praise me as a saviour and in the next dialogue they could curse & question my loyalty. Now this is something not everyone will experience, it has to do with the choices I made and I will not go into these choices, because spoilers. But it felt very unrewarding that characters could have such very split personalities towards me. It also felt like some parts of information was not given to me. Characters jumped to conclusions that did not line up with the information that was given. Also information that should have a huge impact could not be used in conversations during some dialogue conflicts with characters in your party. It feels unfinished & not tested properly after Act 2. A classic example of bite off more than one can chew”.

Several WH40k novels rolled into a game

First things first: As of early 2025 I have just finished a 180h run with no issues. On an OLED Steamdeck. With the default Steamdeck settings. Tuned down to 11W. I get at least 2h battery life out of it. Yes, I played the GOG version of the game on a Steamdeck with the experimental cloud saves turned on in Heroic. Games Launcher The "swing your swords to bathe everything in astonishing amounts of blood" DLC was installed. Second things second: You do not need to know anything about 40k to play this game. The only requirement is that you love reading. Dialogue, found text, every scrap of scripture the game throws your way. While the game looks like a painting in every screenshot, it also requires you to use your inner eye. And the writing is superb. But the game requires you to give in and suspend your disbelief. Of which there is a lot to suspend in WH40k where everything is beyond ridiculous. I waited for a year and just played as I saw fit. I didn't look up any guides and simply picked whatever tickled my fancy on level-up and I did fine on default difficulty level. So you can either YOLO the game or look up builds online. The turn-based combat is standard CRPG turn-based combat. With a twist. You heal all your hitpoints after combat but depending on how damaged you got you may accrue several debuffs. Some classes like to be hurt and get stronger with debuffs. Every encounter is carefully placed and orchestrated. There is surprisingly good ship combat. Basic colony management. Factions with rewards you get for selling your junk. You can set what goes into the junk heap and there is not weight limit. Some things are told as "chose your own adventure" bits of text with skill checks. Like a proper DM would do. The writing in those is amazing. True 40k nerds may have very specific petty complaints. Tl;dr: brilliant entry point to WH40k if you are prepared to sink way over 100h into it. Five stars if you like reading. Zero stars if you don't.

I want to love this game...

but I literally can't complete it because of gamebreaking bugs. Buy it once it's fixed/finished, not before. If it weren't for the bugs I would give it 4-5 stars.
