Vagrus - The Riven Realms: Prologue is an early Demo to Vagrus - The Riven Realms, an award-winning roleplaying game with a narrative focus, open-world exploration, and strong elements of strategy. The player takes the role of a vagrus - a caravan leader who strives to survive in a strange and dangerous dark fantasy world by leading a traveling company on all kinds of ventures.
Vagrus offers great replayability and immersion with its one million words worth of narrative presented through its stories and lore.
This Demo showcases the beginning sections of the game - both from the more narrative-driven introductory part and from the open-world main campaign.
A vast realm is yours to explore, filled with unique locations, strange factions, and a colorful cast of characters. In order to punish the Empire for its sins, the Elder Gods unleashed their power a thousand years ago that ended up devastating the realms. The continent is now a wasteland, riddled with arcane anomalies, swarming with twisted monsters, and haunted by roaming undead even after long centuries of rebuilding.
A large selection of stories make up the game’s narrative in the form of events and quests. The choices you make in these often affect your companions and the world around you. Pick your background from trader, mercenary, or explorer; work for factions, follow rumors and trading opportunities; acquire wealth, gain fame, and discover hidden knowledge.
Engage in turn-based, tactical combat that involves your companions and a large variety of enemies, both humanoid and monstrous. Use a wide range of character skills as well as your own leadership-related abilities to succeed. Positioning and support skills are of paramount importance in these challenging engagements.
Journeys have to be planned and prepared for carefully, lest they end in disaster. Manage your supplies, morale, and your crew’s vigor effectively to survive. Haul cargo and valuables across the wasteland or take it from others. Your crew of workers, fighters, scouts, and slaves have to be managed well to optimize their effectiveness.
A wide variety of companions can work for you in versatile caravan roles, such as scoutmaster, guard captain, treasure hunter, or beast handler. Each companion comes with unique combat skills, background stories, and personal quest lines that can upgrade them further when you complete them.
Ally yourself with mighty factions that shape the Riven Realms with their influence on commerce, brutal wars, and constant scheming. From prosperous Trading Houses to criminal syndicates and religious organizations, these groups offer powerful rewards and boons to those loyal to their cause. But take heed - befriending a faction will more than likely antagonize others.

I've been waiting on this game since I first heard about it. The demo had me sit down and play all the way through - the game world has some nice ideas and the artwork for the game is absolutely gorgeous.
You take control of a caravan of workers, slaves, and guards. Throw in special characters who act as your lieutenants (including in any battles). And then you're set loose into a morally ambiguous world in a text driven RPG.
It clicked near perfectly for me. Where I would criticise right now is in the UI being clunky in places and not particularly intuitive initially given how many menus are tucked out of sight in different places.
I'll be buying for sure when this is released.
First of all two point: The demo is stable and runs well on my machine. This is an extremely high praise for modern games that come with a day-1-patch, yet alone for an indie game that's still in alpha. In addition, previous reviewers talked about grammar mistakes, but I haven't seen any. Maybe my own grammar isn't that good, but it looks like the devs fixed whatever mistakes there were.
Now to the game: This game has a tough job, as it wants to be an open-world, story-driven, survival RPG. Not an easy task at all, but the devs are definitely on the right track!
The setting is well-written, immersive, thought-out and gripping, even if it's a bit too grimdark for me. Companion dialogues are decent, but are obviously limited because of the short demo. I have little doubt, given the overall writing, that they would be expanded greatly. There are only few voiced entries and much to read, but I don't mind that - I've only felt overwhelmed at the end of the open-world campaign where the city had about 6 different areas, each with 6 different places and multiple options in almost each one.
In contrast, the The Riven Realms campaign is very good at keeping you focused, while still giving a lot of lore.
The art is well done and complements the world perfectly, adding to the immersion.
Sound is a bit lackluster - the music/sounds seemed mostly samey and sometimes disappear completely. I think the gloomy atmosphere could use the occasional high notes for contrast.
Combat appears to be very simplistic, unforgiving and actually boring because there are so few options and the fights feel like they take longer than necessary.
The survival/RPG aspect is probably the hardest to evaluate in this stage. The RPG system looks good, but it allows for a lot of trade-offs without clearly indicating what is a good option for your playing style. You have no idea how much a skill will help you with an event, or how often a skill is going to be checked, turning leveling into guesswork.
I played the tutorial and the short intro to the open-world campaign, and especially the latter holds so much promise. Playing the game reminds me a bit of the choose your adventure books of yore, which I greatly enjoyed. There is a great opportunity for role-playing here, and a lot of work has gone into the lore/world building.
I do not like the combat system, but perhaps it will change if I get more practice in it - the tutorial only has a couple of fights and I didn't particularly enjoy the mechanics thereof. But the greatest reason for deciding against purchasing the full game on release comes from my personal aversion to profanity. I don't think the game needs it, as this is already a pretty dark fantasy world, but as I said, it is a matter of personal preference. Apart from that, and with how interesting the first few quests / possible quests sound in the post-tutorial game, I would have grabbed this.
I absolutely love it. A lot of effort went into the art, the writing and especially the world building, and it really shows. I can't wait for the rest of the game!
